Colonnades, Edinburgh
The Signet Library, Parliament Square, Edinburgh EH1 1RF
Opening date: 4 June
What's the story? We can't resist a library-style bar and restaurant. The historic Signet Library in Edinburgh's Old Town is still a working law library, as it was originally intended when it was built in 1822 but has also converted much of its gorgeous space into events venues hosting parties, wedding and occasions alike. Its latest opening, Colonnades, is a bar and restaurant that offers literary lovers a chance to enjoy a Georgian-style room for genteel events like afternoon tea or a celebratory dinner. One for special occasions to be sure.
Social Wine & Tapas, Marylebone, London
39 James Street, London W1U 1EB
Opening date: June 8
What's the story? If there were a restaurateur with the Midas touch it would be Jason Atherton. This is a busy year for him with another opening planned for Clerkenwell, but we expect this wine-focused tapas joint to be a huge hit. Just beside Selfridges - perfect for recovering from a gruelling day’s shopping - every waiter here will be a sommelier.
Truscott Cellar, Belsize Park, London
240 Haverstock Hill, NW3 2AE
Opening date: Mid-June
What's the story? Who says you have to go up west to get a luxe restaurant experience? The folk behind award-winning Maida Vale gastropub The Truscott Arms have edged a little further east with their plans to open up a gastro winebar in Belsize Park. An ultra modernist interior is being conceived by architect Michel Schranz while the menu will consist of small British plates and sharing dishes. Add to that the 50 wines by the glass and we think they’re on to a winner.
Smith & Wollensky, Covent Garden, London
The Adelphi, 1-11 John Adam St, London WC2N 6HT
Opening date: June 22
What's the story? Another steakhouse? Yes, but this one is going to be really interesting, not to mention enormous - hell, they even have a butcher shop and dry-aging room on-site. If you’re after a challenge, may we recommend the 24oz USDA Prime rib-eye? The cocktails also sound rather marvellous, particularly as they’re importing the American concept of pre-made, barrel-aged cocktails so there’s a lot less time spent waiting and more time drinking.
Tarte and Berry
Trinity Leeds, Albion Street, Leeds, Yorkshire LS1 5AT
Opening date: 14 June
What's the story? Leeds' Trinity centre runs a unique pop-up in its Trinity Kitchen, offering street food traders a permanent month-long residency in the shopping centre. Although this is a monthly occurrence, we're particularly excited about the appearance of Tarte and Berry, an artisan bakery run by a pair of sisters from York who set up their own enterprise after working in food communication and discovering the magic formula to enjoying sweet treats. They're hosting a Summer Garden Party for the month of June complete with whitewashed crates, vintage barrels, Pimms and delicious afternoon tea - everything you need for the perfect Instagram post.
Oldroyd, Islington, London
344 Upper Street, London N1 0PD
Opening date: Late June
What's the story? If you’re a fan of Polpo (and who isn’t?) then the opening of this neighbourhood restaurant by the company’s former executive chef should be reason enough to be excited. The tiny space (just 40 seats across two floors) will serve up a British menu of snacks, sharing plates and sarnies - but what we’re really up for is the all day Sunday brunch with Bloody Marys or cold-pressed juices depending on the scale of your hangover.
Morden & Lea, Soho, London
17 Wardour Street, London W1D 6PJ
Opening date: Late June
What's the story? Popular TV chef Mark Sargeant is involved in a few London restaurants, but this new Soho spot is a project he’s been part of since its inception. This modern brasserie, on the fringes of Chinatown will be casual downstairs with cocktails and bar snacks and a more refined upstairs dining room. Don’t forget to leave room for his epic gypsy tart.
Bouillabaisse
4 Mill Street, London W1S 2AX 7
Opening date: June 23
What's the story? Does uber Mayfair hangout Scott’s have a fight on its hands? The arrival of new seafood restaurant Bouillabaisse might shake things up in this rarified bit of London. Behind this is Kurt Zdesar - you may not know his name, but he helped open London’s first Nobu. Here they’re all about the coast - from the seafood that’s landed on it - lobster ravioli anyone? - even focusing on wines from vineyards that run alongside the sea.
Yaki Nori, Birmingham
Bristol Road, Birmingham B29
Opening date: 23 June
What's the story? Popular Birmingham noodle bar Woktastic has been sorely missed by its legions of fans when it closed due to redevelopment of the city centre. But the owners are springing back - opening up two new teppanyaki joints. This first branch of Yaki Nori is opening in Selly Oak, with another planned for September when the works in the centre close. Sushi and noodles will be made to order and will provide an exciting lunch option for both areas.
Historical Dining Rooms, Bristol
The Black Door, Windsor Terrace, Bristol, BS3 4RY
Opening date: Soft launch began 29 May
What's the story? It seems like everyone is banging on about seasonal produce these days, but once upon a time, this was a necessity rather than a trend. The Historical Dining Rooms aims to recreate a Regency dining hall, in every aspect from the decor to the food. Historical nerds will adore the amount of research that has gone into shaping not only the style of the room, but the menus, with a seven-course banquet option with recipes dating back as far as the 15th century. A must-try.
