This morning legendary ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s announced that it is renaming one of its flavours to support the UK proposal to legislate in favour of same sex marriage. By changing the name of its Oh! My! Apple Pie! ice cream to Apple-y Ever After, the American company is hoping to raise awareness of the importance of the issue during its consultation period.

This isn’t the first time Ben & Jerry’s has put their ice cream to political use; they also renamed their famously delicious Chubby Hubby as Hubby Hubby to celebrate gay marriage legalisation in their home state of Vermont. Ilaria Ida, Ben & Jerry’s European Social Mission Manager said “This is a proud day for Ben & Jerry’s when we can show our support for a cause that’s at the core of our values.”

Ben & Jerry’s has also joined forces with gay rights charity Stonewall to launch an application on Facebook, inviting fans to show their support for the proposed legislation and help convince parliament that it’s time to say ‘I do’ to same sex marriage. Laura Doughty, Stonewall’s Deputy CEO says “We’re truly moved by Ben and Jerry’s support for same-sex marriage in Britain. All people want is to call their long-term relationship by the same name as everyone else. Our strong advice to those who disapprove of same-sex marriage is just not to get married to someone of the same sex.”
