The first official trailer for Battle of the Sexes has finally been released – and, judging by the clip, Emma Stone and Steve Carrell’s film is going to be everything we’ve hoped for and more.

Directed by Little Miss Sunshine director Valerie Faris, Battle of the Sexes is loosely based on the infamous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Carell) – it was watched by an estimated 90 million people at the time.

The real-life battle of the sexes began when Riggs declared that the female game of tennis was inferior – and claimed that he could, even at the age of 55, take on any of the sport’s top women players and win.

“I’m not saying women don’t belong on the court,” Carrell’s Riggs declares in the trailer. “Who would pick up the balls otherwise?”

“Keep talking, Bobby,” replies Stone’s King – and you can definitely hear the eye-roll in her voice. “The more nonsense you spout, the worse it’s going to be when you lose.”

In real life, the game was an absolute spectacle – with King carried onto the tennis court atop a chair held by four bare-chested muscle men in the style of ancient slaves.

The feminist and sports star also gifted Riggs a baby pig in the middle of the game to represent how much of a “pig” he was, because life is always better with an organic living and breathing metaphor.

Spoiler alert: King threw her all into the match, taking Riggs down and changing the game for women everywhere.

“I thought it would set us back 50 years if I didn’t win that match,” she said later. “It would ruin the women’s tour and affect all women’s self-esteem.”

The film hits cinemas in autumn 2017.
