We never thought we’d say this, being such staunch #breadxit opponents when the idea was first mooted, but we’re actually loving Channel 4’s take on The Great British Bake Off.
Oh sure, we still miss Mary Berry, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc like we miss our own bed when we crawl out of it every morning to go to work. And, yeah, the adverts are kind of annoying (although they give us ample time to pop the kettle on and cut ourselves another slab of cake). But there’s no denying that the addition of sage foodie Prue Leith keeps things from feeling half-baked – while Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig fulfil the broadcaster’s promise of a “more surreal, comedic take” on the original GBBO.
Mostly, though, nothing’s changed – which includes one of the show’s age-old errors in the opening credits. And, naturally, viewers have taken to Twitter to complain about it.
So what’s the issue?
Well, as the show starts, we’re treated to an array of cosy scenes: a small child eating a biscuit, a gingham tablecloth, a child’s hand (possibly belonging to the same aforementioned small child) bashing a floury loaf of bread, a mixing bowl filled with cake batter.
You get the picture:
There’s a tiny error hidden amongst all the snuggly, homely fun – and it is driving viewers positively bananas.
Or should that be… raspberries?
Yup, there’s a raspberry missing from the bottom right-hand side of the glossy chocolate cake – and a group of hardcore fans have taken it upon themselves to shame Channel 4 bosses for not filling in the gap.
Thankfully, though, one savvy fan managed to fix the problem for everyone with just a sprinkle of Photoshop skill.
There now, was that really so hard?
Of course, that’s not the only ‘scandal’ that’s rocked this year’s season of the show. Let’s not forget the controversial mini roll recipe, the scandalous fondant incident, and the absurd frequency of The Paul Hollywood Handshake.
Most serious of all, though, are the damning claims that have been made about two-time star baker Steven Carter-Bailey, whose ‘shocking’ Instagram account got viewers into a tizzy earlier this week.
All in all, it makes for fabulous telly. Roll on the next episode already.
GBBO continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4
