Trying to remember the good news of 2020? Comedian Sophie Duker spoke at this weekend’s Stylist Live @ Home and reminded us of the unexpected feel-good things that happened during the worst year ever.
We can all probably agree that 2020 has been a rotten old year. Even without the pandemic, we’ve endured continuous horrors and heartache around the world. That said, there have been plenty of reasons to celebrate – you just need to dig a little deeper to find the good news hidden under all the bad stuff.

Luckily, comedian Sophie Duker was on hand to help unearth these golden nuggets on the final day of Stylist Live @ Home. Joining fellow funny woman Olga Koch for the final session of the event, the pair discussed reasons to be cheerful in 2020.
We’ve rounded up some of the answers below, but you can hear Duker and Koch talking about them in hilarious detail by getting a ticket that gives you access to the whole weekend’s talks for the next two weeks.
Sophie Duker’s reasons to be cheerful in 2020:
1. WAP
”WAP by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion [is] one of the most joyful moments of 2020,” says Duker. “From the moment it starts – I rewatched the video, which I recommend to anyone having a low self-esteem day or just feeling a bit down – and it starts with a shot of a beautiful mansion and a fountain, which has busts of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion with shooting, life-giving water coming from their titties. That’s the opening frame…”
She added: “The thing I love most about [it] is not that it was sex-positive and joyful [with] fabulous fashion and cameos […] but that it also pissed off so many bros.”
2. Parasite
”Parasite was probably one of the best films I’ve seen this decade. A South Korean film co-written and directed by Bong Joon-ho. It basically smashed every single award ceremony it touched,” says Duker. “It’s just beautiful. It’s everything you want from a film. And also everybody involved with the film from the composer to the lead actors to Bong himself is just smoking hot. They love each other. Every time you saw them at an award ceremony there was just this huge family vibe. It’s one of the happiest things to happen.”
She added: “We all loved Florence Pugh, we all loved The Irishman (we didn’t)… But I think Parasite is one of the most deserved things to come out of 2020.”
3. LGBTQ+ rights were celebrated
“What was really nice about this year is that a lot of significant people found that they could come out,” said Duker. “A lot of us are making big life decisions like ‘Do I buy £400 worth of gravel?’ and “Do I want to live in the city?’… But I know people personally, and people like Jacquline Wilson, Jameela Jamila and Phillip Schofield, came out.
She explained: “These are people that we live with on our screens and in our faces all the time. Just seeing people being like ‘I’m gonna talk about who I really am this year’ was a very heartwarming, beautiful moment.”
