Love having houseplants in your home? These are the most popular ones to own this year, according to data from Google.
Ah, spring. There’s no season quite like it for conjuring up images of the great outdoors and green spaces full of florals.
Of course, channelling nature is easier if you have a garden – but what if you live in a second-floor flat? Or perhaps you do have a garden, but prefer to keep your foliage inside. Enter: the houseplant. Beloved by all for their ability to bring a taste of the outdoors inside, there’s no denying the popularity of these plants. In fact, Google data has revealed just how much the UK loves a houseplant, as we rank as the third country worldwide for search queries relating to plants.
If your home doesn’t get much sunshine, perhaps you’ve opted for a snake plant that thrives in low light. Or, maybe you embraced the craze for monsteras and yours is now growing sky-high. But, what plants will be most popular in 2025? “This year, we’re seeing a fascinating blend of classic elegance and bold, tropical styles in the top trending houseplants, each bringing a unique character,” explains Daisy Crawley, plant expert at Clifton Nurseries. “These popular choices, representing diverse botanical families, are transforming homes into vibrant, indoor gardens, something Londoners are craving at the moment.”

Wondering which plants are the most popular right now? Here are the top five trending houseplants, according to Google, alongside expert recommendations from Crawley on why you should be adding them to your space in 2025.
1. Money tree
Rather than opting for a traditional plant, why not choose a miniature tree? “These plants symbolise prosperity and need watering when the top inch of soil is dry,” explains Crawley.
2. Boston fern
Looking for an air-purifying plant? The trend for them shows no sign of slowing down, with the Boston fern being a popular option right now. Just be aware that this plant needs a fair bit of love, and Crawley recommends keeping its soil “consistently moist”.
3. Ficus
The great thing about choosing a ficus is that there are plenty of varieties to try, from the fiddle leaf to the rubber plant. “Ficus varieties, offering diverse styles, prefer bright light and watering when the top inch is dry,” advises Crawley.

4. Bird of Paradise
If you’re particularly green-fingered and put time and effort into making sure your houseplants are well-cared for, then the Bird of Paradise, with its exotic leaves and stunning flowers, is a great choice for you. Crawley notes that they need “bright sunlight and regular watering”, so do have a good think about where to place it for optimal light.
5. Aspidistra
If you’re new to houseplants or not particularly great at keeping them alive, let us introduce you to the aspidistra. “This plant tolerates low light and infrequent watering, making it ideal for beginners,” says Crawley.
3 ways to add houseplants to your home
Look at the lighting situation
There’s no point getting a plant that needs lots of natural sunlight if you have darker rooms at home. Consider where you’ll place your plant and what its needs will be.
Think about how often you’re at home
If you’re someone who goes out a lot or books a lot of holidays (lucky you!) then you’ll want to choose a plant that’s lower maintenance. Look for ones that need to be watered less often and don’t need too much care to thrive, such as the aspidistra.
Use tech to help
Still not sure what plant to pick or where to put it? Lean into technology to help. If you have a smartphone which uses AI, like Google’s Pixel 9a with Gemini, just take a photo of your room and add an image of the plant you’d like to help you figure out where to put it. Or visit your nearest garden centre, turn on your video and talk to Gemini live to ask which plants are best suited to your home.
