Whether you plan to dine al fresco or indoors, M&S’s homeware expert shares her top tips for seasonal tablescaping and hosting the perfect spring dinner party.

As a foodie and lifelong chatterbox, there is little I love more than attending or hosting a dinner party. There is so much joy to be found in dining among friends, so it’s little wonder that the World Happiness Report 2025 confirmed that sharing meals is one of the strongest drivers of happiness worldwide.

That being said, while the eating, drinking and catching up is undoubtedly the highlight, when it comes to being the perfect host, there are certain non-negotiables. According to a survey by M&S, a clean and tidy space (68%) and the perfect food and drink spread (54%) top the list. However, 40% of Brits also say that creating the right ambience and atmosphere with tablescaping and seasonal decor is key: think patterned tablecloths, cute napkins and whimsical touches.

“We’re seeing customers really lean into creating a sense of occasion at home,” explains Karen Thomas, head of homeware design. “Whether that’s layering textures and colours with playful cabbageware, boho chic picnicware or channelling Italian summer vibes with Amalfi-inspired ceramics, tablescaping has become an expression of personality and a huge part of the fun of hosting.”

Whether you’re planning an intimate supper with friends or a big family gathering, dinner parties are firmly back on the social calendar. These are the golden rules of how to plan and host the perfect one.

Give yourself enough time

Spontaneous plans can be great, especially on an unexpectedly sunny day, but Thomas’s rule of thumb is to start planning at least a week in advance to give yourself plenty of time for menu prep and table styling without any last-minute panic.

Don’t underestimate the power of scent

The smell of a delicious dinner cooking isn’t the only scent to consider – according to Thomas, 28% of 25–34-year-olds said choosing the right room fragrance was non-negotiable. As a final touch before welcoming your guests, consider a diffuser or candle to set the mood.

Elevate your tablescape with layering

“Use a textured tablecloth and elegant dinnerware to create an inviting atmosphere,” says Thomas. “Dinner candles and fresh flowers can be used to add height.”

If the weather allows, take the party outside

Whether you have your own outdoor space or access to a local park,  a few soft throws, outdoor lanterns and a beautifully laid garden table can turn a simple al fresco gathering into something memorable.
