Houseplants aren’t going anywhere for 2025. Here’s how to make them work with the design of your home.

How many houseplants do you own? If you’re anything like us, you’ll have them all over your home, from the hanging plants you keep around your bookcases to the snake plant that thrives in the bathroom.

However, sometimes choosing where to put your houseplant can be tricky. Not only do you have to think about its care needs – such as how much sunlight or water it needs – but it can also be hard to know where they best fit with the aesthetic or your rooms. For example, a row of plants may look out of place if you prefer more modern or minimalist designs, or you may be wondering what colour pots will look good in your space.

The good news is that most homes, no matter what your design preference is, can instantly look refreshed with the addition of a few houseplants. Here, Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies and author of the houseplant guide The Unkillables, shares her top tips for incorporating houseplants into your home in 2025.

Embrace the biophilic trend

Ever since the pandemic, when many of us were spending long periods of time in our homes, there’s been a desire to bring the outside in – especially if you have no garden space.

This trend shows no sign of stopping for 2025 and lends itself perfectly to adding more houseplants to your space. “Houseplants offer an easy way to incorporate biophilic design into your home or office space,” explains Lambell on the practice of connecting people and nature within built environments. “Pairing your greenery with pots made from natural materials, like terracotta or stone, enhances the fresh feel for the new year. With most houseplants boasting green foliage, this colour matches beautifully with the palette of 2025.”

Match with an earthy colour palette

Earthy neutrals are set to be everywhere for 2025, with Pantone announcing its colour of the year as ‘Mocha Mousse’ – a warm and rich brown.

For houseplant lovers, Lambell suggests embracing this trend by pairing your plants with brown pots. “Brown and green are both calming colours in the environment, so they work well together. Dark greens like forest green go best with shades of brown [and] these tones add warmth and texture to your space.”

Don’t be afraid to go big and bold

Bold colours more your thing than neutrals? Fear not, houseplants look equally great with vibrant shades. “We’re seeing a real shift towards self-expression in interiors for 2025 too, with people choosing statement plants as focal points,” Lambell says. “Pairing large, architectural greenery like a monstera deliciosa with richly coloured pots or stands allows you to embrace the trend while adding a personal touch to your home. It’s all about creating spaces that feel unique, vibrant and uplifting.”
