4 ways to style your dining room for spring, according to an interiors expert

Looking to refresh your dining space with a few small touches or even a total reset? An interior designer shares her top tips.
If you’re anything like us, you’ll be using the first month of spring as a chance to give your home a refresh. Perhaps you’ve decided to clean your whole apartment from top to toe, or maybe you’ve decided to buy some new home accessories to give your space a new lease of life.
Whatever you’ve chosen to do, there’s no denying that spring gets many of us in the mood for a switch-up. In fact, research shows that over nine in 10 UK households take part in spring cleaning.
While your first thought might be to give the kitchen a deep clean or reorganise your living room, there’s one space that often gets forgotten about: the dining room. Whether you have a separate dining room or have a space carved out for a table in an open plan situation, refreshing your dining area can help to give your home a new lease of life. “Spring is the ideal time to give your dining room a stylish update, as the season naturally brings a sense of renewal and vibrancy,” says Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft. “With longer days and an influx of natural light, the room feels brighter and more inviting, making it the perfect moment to introduce lighter colours, airy textiles and fresh decor.”
Collins also points to how spring is the ideal time to update your dining room, as typically we do more entertaining as the weather gets warmer. “Whether you’re looking to entertain or simply refresh your environment, the spring season offers endless possibilities to breathe new life into your dining room,” she adds.
So, if you’re ready to get your dining space ready for spring – and want to be in-the-know about what looks will be trending this season – here are Collins’ four top tips for creating a stylish dining room.
Embrace statement pieces
You don’t have to buy new furniture to give this space a whole new feel. “Focus on statement pieces for the table, whether it’s some beautiful plates and napkins or a floral centrepiece,” suggests Collins. “Make sure they reflect your style and last the entire season (obviously flowers will be refreshing) and focus on one style type so it doesn’t look too messy. That can be a sleek modern table, a rustic wood piece, or a bold, unique design. Make sure it suits the overall vibe you want.”

Lean into trending colours
Wondering what colours will be trending this season? According to Collins, it’s all about reds. “In 2024, we’ve seen pops of red used strategically rather than saturating entire rooms – and I expect this trend to continue evolving into spring 2025,” she says. “However, I believe we’ll see people getting bolder with red, moving toward fully covering their walls. Rather than the intense blood reds we’ve seen, the shade will likely shift toward a warmer cherry red – a tone that feels a bit more approachable and comfortable for larger surfaces. This softer red brings warmth and vibrancy while making a striking yet welcoming statement in any dining room.”
Looking to incorporate the trend in a more subtle way? Look to furniture, like Swyft’s Dining Table 02 which is built with solid red oak and curved edging. The table and matching Dining Chair 02 follow a 70s-retro-inspired style, with nostalgic homeware also emerging as a trend for this season.
Play with texture
In addition to thinking about how you want your dining room to look, think about how you want it to feel, too. “To give the room depth and interest, mix different textures throughout,” advises Collins. “Think about incorporating plush fabrics with velvet or linen cushions, a textured rug under the table or woven materials like rattan or wicker for a more natural touch. Layering textures adds richness and makes the space feel inviting, while also allowing you to play with colour and pattern in a subtle yet impactful way.”

Don’t forget lighting
When focusing on furniture, decor and colour, it can be easy to overlook lighting. But, just making some small tweaks is another great way of adding a new depth to your dining room space. “Lighting is key to setting the mood in a dining room,” says Collins. “If you want to keep the main overhead light on, consider softer lower-strength bulbs. I’m always one for lower-level lighting, and I’m seeing a lot of battery-powered lights sitting on the dining table, which looks so elegant and chic.”
