Colour clashing in your home can be nerve-racking. Yes, the interior influencers and experts may be showing off their vibrant walls and colour-clashing bathrooms, but many of us wouldn’t know where to start. So, if you’re keen to get in on the trend but want to start small, here are some homeware buys to incorporate into your home today.
Those who love simplistic decor schemes and neutral interior palettes may shudder at the thought of incorporating colour clashing into their homes, but adding colour in bold and daring ways certainly adds intrigue and vibrancy to a home.
Colour clashing is maximalism at its finest, and when done properly (we’re not recommending going too OTT here) can really make a room, or the focal point of a room, stand out. If you’re confident in your colour-clashing ability this may be done in bold ways, such as kitchen walls paired with bright, colour-contrasted cabinetry or bright bathroom tiles sitting alongside clashing towels and bath mats.
But if you’re not quite ready to experiment on your walls or in the larger furnishings in your home, you can certainly put the colour-clashing theory to the test by incorporating fun and interesting homeware buys into your space.
Here are 12 of our favourite pieces to buy right now.
Ikea Tesamanns pre-cut fabric
Ikea’s latest collection, Tesamanns, is a collaboration with Dutch design duo Raw Color and seeks to highlight how colour can transform everyday objects and bring joy into people’s homes. This pre-cut fabric can be turned into anything by the crafty among us, but we think it’s perfect to add colour and vibrancy to a dining room table.
Henry Holland Studio side plates
These ceramic side plates in the perfect terracotta and blue colour-clash combo are a playful way to add interest to your next dinner party. In collaboration with Soho House, each piece is unique and uses the nerikomi pottery technique – the art of stacking and cutting coloured pieces of clay before throwing them to make different patterns.
David Perry chequered coasters
These petal pink and tangerine orange chequered coasters will add a little pizzazz to your side tables. Made using kiln-formed glass, you can go with one colour shade or mix and match with a variety of vibrant colours.
H&M Seersucker cushion cover
Forget the phrase ‘blue and green should never be seen’, we love the two colours together. The two shades are close on the colour wheel, so pairing them creates a nice scheme. H&M’s vibrant blue and green seersucker cushions are a fab way to brighten up a sofa or turn an armchair into a focal point.
Pooky straight empire shade in hand-blocked ‘ditsy floral’
When it comes to lampshades, Pooky is absolutely nailing clashing colours and patterns. For me, a vibrant lampshade is an easy way to add colour-clashing or clashing prints to a room.
This ditsy floral design by Ellen Merchant combines green and blue with a bright pink band at the top and base of the shade.
Anthropologie Beatriz striped square cushion
Inspired by the French countryside, these adorable, frilly, striped cushions come in the perfect colour-clashing combo of lime green and pastel purple. Ruffled cushions add a particular chicness to bed decor, and this colour scheme really makes a statement.
Rockett St George 'bonjour' bathmat
Bathmats are an easy and fun, way to add colour-clashing combinations to your space, not to mention a little personality. Pink and orange is one of the best colour combinations around, and this mat will certainly brighten your day every time you step into the shower.
Piglet in Bed pistachio gingham linen bundle
Piglet in Bed is one of my all-time favourite bedding brands if you want to feel super-luxe, and thanks to their linen and cotton bedding bundles, you can colour clash to your heart’s content.
By mixing and matching its range of colours and patterns, the colour-clashing opportunities are endless. I particularly love the new pistachio gingham sheets, especially when paired with a dusk blue fitted sheet and pillowcases.
Dusen Dusen striped canisters
These striped canisters are perfect to liven up a kitchen counter while conveniently storing your tea, coffee and sugar. Made from galvanised steel, they come in short, medium and tall sizes and the lids are interchangeable.
Ceramic lobster serving platter
This stoneware serving platter is perfect for summer dining and subtly combines clashing colours. But if you really want to amp up the combination, pair it with bright tablecloths and clashing glasses to bring joy to your outdoor dining.
Ian Snow pink and red katran jug
Bold red and pastel pink strike again with this eye-catching decorative vase. It’s made from katran, a handmade material made from waste cotton from the fashion industry, which is then mixed and made into a pulp (a bit like papier-mâché). This means the vase is not water resistant, though, so swap fresh flowers for dried versions.
