There’s something quintessentially European about a vineyard trip, but the UK has wineries to rival France’s finest.

While a Provencal vineyard conjures an undeniably romantic idyll, if you’ve never thought of visiting a UK vineyard during the summer, you’re missing a trick. Usually free to enter, often child friendly and with gorgeous restaurants attached, a vineyard trip makes for a perfect sunny day out. Breathtaking views and the chance to sample award-winning UK wines are the cherry on the top.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of the finest vineyards in the land so you can plan the ultimate imbiber’s staycation.

Nutbourne Vineyard, West Sussex

Nutbourne Vineyard, West Sussex

This boutique vineyard and farm in West Sussex has been run by the Gladwin family since the early 1990s and, in addition to the stunning vines, offers wildflower meadows, alpacas, lakes and gorgeous picnic spots to enjoy alongside a tipple.

The vineyard produces award-winning sparkling and still wines, with Nutty and Nutty Wild among its popular sparkling offerings. Its pinot noir, Sussex Reserve and bacchus wines are excellent, too.

The cellar door is open through the year but in summer the vineyard offers guided tours, tastings, picnics and Thursday night supper clubs among the vines.
