This is the delicious, in-demand cocktail you need to have on your festive party menu

According to TikTok search data, the most in-demand cocktail of 2023 has been less of a winter warmer, and more of a summer staple. Regardless of the season however, we’re big fans.

It’s hard to do anything on social media without stumbling across at least a few videos teaching us how to make some tasty thing or another. It’s part of why we love it so much, to the point where plenty of us head straight to platforms like TikTok and Instagram instead of actual recipe books whenever we need a bit of inspo.

And when it comes to what we’re searching for on social media, it seems the delightfully sour and salty margarita has had a fantastic year.

Bar hire company Spin & Shake analysed over 16 billion hashtag searches on TikTok and found that the humble margs has had over 3 billion searches in its own right this year for terms like ‘margarita recipe’, ‘margarita’, and ‘margarita ingredients’. It beat out cocktails like the Woo Woo (2.6 billion) and the Michelada (1.6 billion), which were its runners-up.

Whether you’re among those who’ve been searching high and low online for the perfect margs recipe, or you’re looking for the best serve for your upcoming festive party, the director of Spin & Shake, Bryan Levato, has the recipe for you…

How to make the perfect margarita cocktail

  1. Rub a lime wedge on the rim of the glass, then dip it into salt so the entire rim is covered. If you do not like that much salt, you can only do half a rim.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add 40 ml of tequila, 30 ml of lime juice, 20 ml of triple sec, and around 20 ml of sugar syrup if you and your friends do not like it too sour.
  3. Shake well for about 10 seconds.
  4. Strain the mixture using a cocktail strainer into the glass. Garnish with a lime wedge. Top tips for a sweet treat: Replace the triple sec with agave syrup and add a little extra tequila to compensate.

“There are a number of ways to drink this cocktail,” Levato adds. “One is by serving it straight up in a martini glass or margarita glass, the other is by simply having it on the rocks in a rock glass. I recommend garnishing your margarita with an orange wedge for an extra kick, as well as squeezing the wedge into the cocktail which will highlight the flavour of the triple sec.

“For a twist, you can also make the margarita flavoured by adding some fruit puree such as strawberry, raspberry, passion fruit or similar.”
