Red wine isn’t just for winter. Here are eight light and fruity reds that are perfect for summer drinking.
I’ll confess – I don’t know a lot about wine. Sure, I’ll go crazy for a crisp glass of Whispering Angel after work, but ask me about the ‘rules’ and I can tell you only one: that red wine should be served at room temperature. Or so I thought.
Because a good bottle of red isn’t just for winter or washing down a hearty Sunday roast. In reality, there are plenty of light and fruity varieties that are better chilled, making them perfect to sip alongside warm-weather whites and rosés if you’re picnicking or in a pub garden.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry. Here is everything you need to know about the best red wines to serve chilled this summer.
Quarticello Neromaestri Lambrusco
Medium bodied and naturally sparkling, this blend of maestri and grasparossa is vibrant and fresh, perfect for quenching a summer’s day’s thirst.
Sunny With a Chance of Flowers Pinot Noir
Described as full of juicy berry flavours and silky-smooth, this pinot noir is a perfect choice for wine lovers who prefer their tipple on the lighter side. It’s best served chilled, alongside dishes such as rotisserie chicken or tomato basil pasta.

Nouveau Love Bite
Sustainably produced in South Africa, Love Bite is a punchy cinsault with soft tannins and red fruits.
L’Occhiolino Sparkling Red
At just 7.5% alcohol, L’Occhiolino is perfect for stylish picnics and long, lazy afternoons of sipping with friends.
Jumping Juice Half Full Red
This Australian offering places drinkability very much at the fore, with crushing acidity and joyful red fruits pushing things along.

Vigna Rosa Lambrusco Blend
The family-run company behind Vigna Rosa has been producing lambrusco in Italy since the 1800s. Take it from us: you’re in good hands with this one.
Not Your Grandma’s Chillable Red
As its name might suggest, this wine is sassy, with lifted aromatics of rose petals, red berries, cola and a subtle fresh earthy note.
Shop Not Your Grandma’s Chillable Red, via The Great Wine Co, £15.50
Puro! Lambrusco
Versatile and best served with savoury first courses and meat main courses, this is a brilliant ruby red wine with an inviting and intense bouquet of black cherry and plum.
