Consider it a hot take, but we don’t believe that spice should be left behind in the cold, dark winter season. With summer right around the corner, start infusing that spice with some sweetness for some ‘swicy’ flavours to bring to your garden party bites or boozy brunches.
With the popularity of spicy margaritas and chilli honey fast becoming everyone’s favourite pizza topping, you may have noticed that a new alliance has been formed between sweet and spicy. Indeed, ‘swicy’ food has sent its sweet and salty predecessor further down the list of go-to flavour combinations – so what exactly is it?
Swicy is quite simply a term used to describe foods, condiments, drinks or seasonings that have elements of both sweetness and spiciness. With this new combination really taking off, here are eight of our favourite swicy products to be used for some of your upcoming culinary efforts this summer, including bakes, sharp and flavourful savoury fusions and even some experimental cocktails to introduce at your next soirée.
Wilderbee hot honey
Wiltshire Chilli Farm naga chilli chocolate
A deeply rich dark chocolate coming out of Wiltshire Chilli Farm in Melksham. This bar contains naga chilli powder and sustainably sourced cocoa from the Ivory Coast. Enjoy this on its own for its smooth potent spice or add it to a chocolatey bake for some extra depth.
Doxi’s spicy margarita
You might find yourself in need of a zesty and perfectly pre-made bottled cocktail for the boozy get-together you and your friends decided to have on a whim. Doxi’s spicy margarita, a zesty blend of reposado tequila, red chilli agave and orange, is convenient, delicious and fills your swicy needs.
AJR gochujang
A powerful red chilli paste made by Ajumma Republic but available in most supermarkets, gochujang is only getting more widely used – and for good reason. Combine this sweet and spicy classic in a stir-fry with some aromatics and fresh, seasonal summer vegetables like cabbage or asparagus.
The Chuckling Cheese Company chilli jam
For those looking to bring some swice to their summer but can’t quite handle the heat, your cheese boards and fresh leafy greens could pair beautifully with a mild chilli jam that still packs that punch of extra character to your light dishes, but with a milder burst.
Proper Marmalade Company hot orange marmalade
The citrus-based cousin of jam, a hot marmalade from The Proper Marmalade Company will be an unlikely but welcome guest on your next culinary venture. Use this as a flavourful rub for an oven-baked salmon or spread on some crusty bread with your choice of cheese.
Tajin chilli and lime seasoning
This seasoning mix brings a sharp and zesty sweetness with a distinct heat. An easy go-to for a versatile addition to anything from vegetable crudités to a colourful salad of your favourite seasonal fruits.
