We round up the tastiest gluten-free Christmas products – perfect for gifting, snacking, indulging and generally not missing out this year.
Roast dinner. Cheese and crackers. Pudding. Cake. Mince Pies. Gingerbread. All things you probably can’t eat in the traditional format if you’re going gluten-free. Whether you’re coeliac, gluten-sensitive or suffer from IBS, following a GF diet can often be restrictive – especially at this time of year. But it doesn’t have to be.
There are plenty of great gluten-free options out there if you know where to look, meaning you don’t have to miss out on anything this year. What’s more, they don’t all taste like soggy cardboard either – with some of best brands offering up luxury Christmas food to make the rest of the table jealous.
Here we round up the best products for a gluten-free Christmas.
Best Panettone: Carluccio's Panettone Senza Glutine
Made to a traditional Italian recipe from a rice flour sourdough and scattered with juicy raisins and peel, this gluten-free panettone screams Christmas with every bite. Plus, the gorgeous paper will save you a job wrapping.
Best Mince Pies: M&S Made Without Wheat 4 Mince Pies
After extensive GF mince pie testing (someone’s got to do it), these M&S ones came out on top. The pastry is light, buttery and crumbly, with the perfect ratio of filling to case. Even the gluten-eaters of the team were won over.
Best Hamper: Fortnum & Mason The Joy of Christmas Hamper, Made Without Wheat
What’s better than opening a stocking on Christmas day morning? Opening an iconic F&M hamper, that’s what. Filled with a selection of tea, wine, sweets, biscuits and a Christmas pud, it’s the ultimate gift for gluten-avoiding foodies.
Shop Fortnum & Mason The Joy of Christmas Hamper, Made Without Wheat, £160
Best Beer: First Chop Beyond The Pale Set
This set from gluten-free craft brewers First Chop is a mix of pale ales, IPAs, reds and stouts – pair with Christmas dinner, cheese and biscuits, and pretty much everything else.
Best Stuffing: M&S Chestnut & Cranberry Stuffing
You could spend your time blitzing up breadcrumbs and picking off rosemary leaves, but we say a shop-bought stuffing is just as good (and, crucially, frees up more time for TV and chocs). This one has a great texture, is nicely seasoned, and comes with a delicate sweetness from chestnuts, cranberries and caramelised onions.
Best Gingerbread: Vida Bakery Gingerbread Decorating Kit
Decorating your own biscuits might be half the fun, but only if you can actually eat them afterwards. Perfect for gifting or as a fun activity for kids and adults alike, Vida Bakery’s Gingerbread Decorating Kit is also free from dairy and eggs so no one need miss out.
Best Christmas Cake (Traditional): Asda Extra Special Free From Luxury Christmas Cake
Christmas cake is an item that recently divided the Stylist office, but for those who love it, you can’t get a better gluten-free option than Asda’s. Moist, sticky and rich, with a warming hit of ruby port and French brandy, it’s enough to win everyone over.
Best Christmas Cake (Non-Traditional): Lola’s Festive Greetings Free From Cake
Lola’s always deliver when it comes to delicious gluten-free cakes, and this year’s offering is a showstopper. Choose from either a moist chocolate or vanilla sponge, decorated with piping, sprinkles and redcurrants.
Best Yule Log: Morrisons The Best Free From Yule Log
Who doesn’t love a yule log? Coeliacs, usually… Special thanks to Morrisons, then, for making the perfect way to finish off any festive meal or as a little extra with a cup of tea.
Best Biscuits: Sainsbury’s Free From Caramelised Chocolate Orange Cookies
These Christmassy cookies combine chocolate chunks, Sicilian orange paste and warming spices for the kind of snack you wish came in a bigger box. Much too good to leave out for Santa (unless he’s following a gluten-free diet too this year…?)
Shop Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Free From Caramelised Chocolate Orange Cookies, £2.50
Best Christmas Pudding: Carved Angel Gluten Free Christmas Pudding
Round off your Christmas dinner with Carved Angel’s delicious gluten-free pud. Packed with fruits, moist, and with a decent glug of brandy, it’s the taste of Christmas in one big, sticky spoon.
