If you’re going to leave the comfort of your sofa this autumn, make sure it’s for one of these cosy drinking spots.
As the temperatures start to drop, it takes a lot for us to leave the comfort and warmth of our homes. So if we’re going to make outdoor plans, it better be for something cosy: think wholesome roast dinners and homely wine bars where the only thing we need to worry about is what cheese to pair with a good bottle of red.
Thankfully, the city is full of such places, from the likes of Humble Grape to the subterranean setting of The Bishop’s Vaults. Here are seven of our favourite spots to spend a cold and dark evening, a warming first date or a slow Sunday in.
The Bishop’s Vaults
Your new dark-evening hideaway awaits in the form of London’s latest subterranean wine bar, The Bishop’s Vaults. Located behind the delightful Dirty Dicks pub and steeped in history and charm, lose yourself in this undiscovered speakeasy serving a vast array of wines alongside cheese and charcuterie plates.
Address: 202 Swedeland Court, Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4NR
Vicinity bar at The Tower Hotel
Even after temperatures drop, you can still enjoy al fresco drinking at Vicinity bar at The Tower Hotel, which offers ‘cosy nights out’ with impeccable city views, snuggled by Thames-side fire pits.

Bookbar
Nothing screams autumn more than a venue that mixes a bookshop and a wine bar. Designed to feel like your most well-read friend’s living room, Bookbar’s cosy cellar is the perfect spot to curl up with a glass of wine and a great read.

Hithe + Seek
Intimate and immersive, at Hithe + Seek you can enjoy your favourite bottle of red or white with unobstructed views of the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
