You heard it here: cheesecake is cool again. Here’s where to get your hands on the best Basque cheesecake in London.
If you’ve noticed a certain baked, burnt cheesecake taking over your social media timelines and foodie recommendations, you’re far from alone. Right now, a thick, creamy Basque cheesecake is all anyone wants to get their hands on.
From humble origins over two decades ago in the old town of San Sebastian, it’s now become the dessert du jour, with everywhere from Hackney institution Elliot’s to cult dining spot Brat serving up their own versions.
Keen to get your hands on a slice, or maybe even a whole one? Here are seven spots in London that deserve a visit.
La Maritxu
La Maritxu is widely considered the London home of the caramelised, crustless cheesecake. Expect a beautiful burnt exterior and rich creamy interior.
Brat
You’ll have no doubt spied the iconic Brat burnt cheesecake across your social media timeline. Having been on the menu since the cult dining spot opened in 2018, it’s become a sweet, spongy signature – and for good reason.
Sourdough Sophia
After just a slice? Look no further than micro-bakery Sourdough Sophia for the ultimate afternoon pick-me-up.
Le Choux
This west London patisserie is known for its French classics, from profiteroles to choux buns. But don’t overlook its gloriously charred Basque cheesecake (with signature Le Choux biscuit base) next time you stop in.
Lurra
Who wouldn’t want to get their hands on a whole baked cheesecake from one of the city’s best-loved Spanish restaurants? Lurra’s delicious recipe has been more than a decade in the making, so you’re guaranteed to love it.
Solis
A chicken and steak grill may seem like an unlikely place to find a world-class dessert, but Solis has made a name for itself in the Battersea Power Station Arcade food hall for just that. Its torte de queso isn’t just the perfect amount of charred: it’s also served dripping in a sweet berry sauce.
Elliot’s
At Hackney institution Elliot’s, the Basque cheesecake is served with a deliciously tart poached rhubarb on the side.
