From Fortnum & Mason’s new opening to Brick Lane’s iconic yellow Beigel Shop, London is well and truly in its bagel era.
Once upon a time, when you imagined buying a mouthwatering bagel filled to the brim with creamy cheese or pastrami, you probably pictured a tiny hole-in-the-wall shop in New York City. But no longer.
In 2024, London is giving the Big Apple a run for its money as the bagel capital, with recent new openings taking the city by storm alongside beloved institutions that have been serving hungry Londoners for years.
And if you’re looking for the best of the best, we know just where to find them, whether you like your bagel classic or with a little adventure on the side.
It's Bagels
Address: 65 Regent’s Park Rd, London NW1 8XD
The Good Bagel
Now tucked away inside Perky Blenders on Stoke Newington Church Street, The Good Bagel offers fresh bagels and homemade deli classics (smoked salmon and schmear) and new launches including roasted cauli with zhoug.
Address: 56 Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 0NB
Fortnum’s Bagel Bar
Piccadilly institution Fortnum & Mason recently opened its own New York bagel bar on the lower-ground floor of the Royal Exchange, serving six types of bagel and 11 cream cheese options to go wild with.
Address: 181 Piccadilly, London W1A 1ER
Papo’s Bagels
Papo’s Bagels brings true NY bagels – handmade fresh every morning by Papo himself – to London, along with cream cheese and smoked salmon.
Address: 73-75 Shacklewell Ln, London E8 2EB
B Bagel
Drawing on 30 years of experience, B Bagel uses a traditional family recipe that’s prepared and baked in-store, bringing bagels that are crispy on the outside, chewy and doughy on the inside – just as they should be – to the ring. The menu features plenty of adventurous offerings (chicken schnitzel, anyone?) but don’t skip over the classic fillings such as smoked salmon and cream cheese, hot salt beef and pastrami.
Address: 94 Tottenham Court Rd, London W1T 4TN
Beigel Shop
Founded in 1855, the Beigel Shop was the original beigel bakery to open on Brick Lane. Since then, the landmark institution (probably better known as ‘the yellow one’) has only grown in popularity thanks to its classic styles and delicious menu.
Address: 159 Brick Ln, London E1 6SB
Beigel Bake
Sitting right next door to the Beigel Shop, you’ll find Beigel Bake (’the white one’). That’s right, Brick Lane is home to two of London’s finest bagel joints. The Beigel Shop does bagels the classic way, and they do them well. You’ll also find a range of desserts. Be sure to plan ahead and prepare to queue.
Address: 159 Brick Ln, London E1 6SB
Rye Lane Bagels
This little south-east London Bagel stop opened quietly in early 2024. Its tagline? ‘Classic bagels with interesting fillings.’ Tucked away on Rye Lane near Peckham Rye Station, you’ll find freshly made bagels with interesting fillings ranging from brisket to butter chicken. Oh, and for Peckham party people… it’s open until 4am.
Address: 100 Rye Ln, London SE15 4RZ
The Happening Bagel Bakery
The clue’s in the name. This place is happening. This little bagel bakery is located around the corner from Finsbury Park station. You’ll find reasonably priced, well-made bagels and cakes – all perfect for eating on the go or taking home in bulk.
Address: 284A Seven Sisters Rd, Finsbury Park, London N4 2AA
