Fitness challenge: how flexible does a 30-day splits challenge make you?

Always dreamt of being able to do the splits but have super-tight hip flexors? Writer Funmi Olutoye embarked on a 30-day splits programme to help her nail the ultimate flexibility. Here’s how she got on.

Ever dreamt of being able to do the splits? Me too. Despite always being super active, there’s one fitness challenge that I’ve always wanted to take on: learning the splits.

Developing that kind of flexibility can be difficult for anyone of any size, but for bigger women like me, there is an assumption that we don’t move, stretch or challenge our bodies in the same way that other people do. Because of that, I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d never be properly flexible. 

Lockdown, however, provided me with a chance to challenge this idea. I found a challenge online called #JourneytoSplits by fitness guru Cassey Ho (@blogilates), which was based around a range of daily exercises set over a 30-day period. It promised that by the end of the month – if you followed it properly – you’d get your splits.
