Studios are increasingly using positive affirmations to get their clients to push harder during classes. Writer Victoria Stokes explores whether all that self-talk actually makes us stronger.
Picture the scene: you’re at your Tuesday spin class, your heart is pounding, sweat is pumping out of every pore, and your legs are getting tired and heavy. Just as you’re about to throw in the metaphorical towel, the fitness instructor yells out: “Push! Come on, guys – you can do it. 10 more seconds!”
You muster the strength and stamina to give your workout one last push, blasting through the final few rotations before collapsing on top of the handlebars. You did it. But how much is your success (or survival) thanks to the motivating words of your instructor?
