But back to getting scanned. First, I’m handed an iPad and asked a series of questions about my health and lifestyle to help form a full picture of my overall wellbeing. The questionnaire even wants to know about my current state of mind: am I anxious? Stressed? Tired? I tick all of the above – and that’s before I’ve even started the cognitive assessment tasks up next.

Once in the scanning room, the technician uses sticky tape to attach two wires to my forehead, which will feed back to the machine tracking my brain waves. The quiet hum is a stark contrast to the MRI scanners I’m more familiar with. In fact, I’d go so far as to say the whole experience is quite relaxing. But dozing off is out of the question, so I focus on the ‘X’ on the screen in front of me and wait until the 10 minutes is up. Once it is, and I’ve been fully de-wired, I’m free to leave, safe in the knowledge that my results will be sent to me the next day.

Less than 24 hours later, the email lands in my inbox along with an invitation to book a follow-up call with MYndspan’s chief science officer, Dr Ben Dunkley. I’m relieved to see that my predicted functional brain age is 26 – seven years younger than my actual age.
