As Stylist’s Every Loss Counts campaign highlights, one in six women who lose a baby in early pregnancy experience long-term symptoms of post-traumatic stress – as do one in 12 partners. Miscarriage has been found to double the risk of depression, while Black women are at a 40% increased risk of miscarriage compared to white women.

Vicki Robinson, chief executive of the Miscarriage Association, said the charity had been “extremely keen to see the scheme extended” and that “today marks a significant milestone for those who have waited for this recognition”.

“For many, even the earliest of losses can be deeply distressing, both emotionally and physically, but having a formal acknowledgement as a marker of their loss can be a meaningful part of the grieving process,” she said. “We know from the people that we support how much the certification scheme has helped those who have experienced pregnancy loss, so this is great news that people whose losses were previously not acknowledged now can be.”
