On the hunt for a pair of running shorts that make you look and feel great? Here are 12 of the best pairs for runners of all levels.
We get it: the idea of running in shorts can be daunting. As we previously discovered here at Strong Women, over half of us would never swap our leggings for a pair of shorts, no matter how hot the weather gets. The reasons for this were varied: low body confidence, fear of being catcalled and simply wanting to avoid chafing were just some that popped up – but the outcome was the same. Even in summer, many of us would prefer not to get our legs out.
There is, of course, nothing wrong with covering up, and those who choose to dress modestly should exercise in whatever they feel comfortable in. But if the main factor holding you back is how you’ll look or feel in a pair of shorts, then we guarantee there’s a pair out there that’ll make you feel great.

After all, a pair of running shorts should be both comfortable and supportive and leave you feeling confident and ready to hit the pavement – not self-conscious.
So, to help you pick out a pair that works for you, we’ve put together this guide to the best running shorts for women that’ll make you look and feel great. There is a range of styles, so whether you love tiny, breezy shorts, prefer a more compressive style or want a lightweight, longer option, there’s a pair here you’ll love.
Under Armour Play Up Shorts 3.0
Breezy and lightweight, these are a classic workhorse pair of shorts that will get you through sticky summer runs.
They have a thick, soft elastic waistband that’s comfy and supportive, and they’re made of wicking material that keeps sweat away from your body. Oh, and they have a massive range of sizes – from XXS to XXXL – so there’s a pair for nearly everyone.
Hoka Sky Skort
Hoka is known for its durable, cushioned shoes – but they make great kit, too. This high-rise skort with a three-inch inseam is made up of a lightweight skirt with stretchy shorts underneath, making it ideal for long runs or just wearing day to day. There’s even a pocket for your phone, too.
Miranda Larbi, Strong Women editor, says: “This skort has to be the most stylish bit of kit I own – in fact, I’ve started wearing it as a staple summer item now. From a running perspective, you’ve got the supportive shorts layer, and then the free-flowing skirt bit that gives you a bit more privacy for days when you don’t want to wear skin-tight clothing. I’ve started cycling in mine too.”
H&M Double Layered Running Shorts
In the mood for something colourful? This pair from H&M could be just what you’re looking for.
The tight, stretchy inner shorts are covered by a lightweight, slightly stretchy shell, making them your secret weapon against thigh chafing.
ASICS Nagino 4-inch Run Short
If you’re a fan of all things high-waisted, you’ll love these shorts from ASICS. Lightweight and breathable by design, they’re fitted with a back pocket and storage slot so you can carry everything you need without all the fuss.
Lauren Geall, Strong Women senior writer says: “I tend to wear shorts to run most of the year, so I’ve tried out a few different designs over the years. These shorts from ASICS are the first high-waisted pair I’ve worn, and I fell in love quickly. Not only are they incredibly comfortable, but the pockets in the back are large enough to fit my phone and keys – ideal for hot days when I don’t want to wear a running vest or belt on top of my kit.
“The only catch? They don’t have any built-in under shorts or pants, so they can feel a little exposing – especially when you’re sprinting. To solve the problem, I’ve started wearing a pair of tight cycling shorts underneath for a little more coverage.”
Gymshark Speed Shorts
These shorts have a thick, supportive waistband that is super-comfy and features a hidden pocket. They’re short, but not too short, and they’re made of super thin, wicking material that won’t trap sweat.
Although they don’t come in many fun colours, they’re a great basic pair that won’t break the bank.
Nike Tempo Luxe
Nike Tempos are a classic, and this updated version is the perfect go-to pair of running shorts.
Unlike older models that were lightweight but stiff, the Tempo Luxe has stretchy fabric and side slits that give you more range of motion and offer a breezy feel. They’ve also added a larger zip side pocket that’s big enough to fit your phone.
Know The Origin Destination Running Shorts
Made from 90% recycled materials sourced from used plastic bottles, these comfy, sustainable shorts are ideal for walks, long runs and everything in between.
Lauren says: “There’s nothing better than a piece of clothing that’s both comfy and functional, and these shorts tick all the boxes. They’re high-waisted in a way which feels secure, but not so high-waisted that I feel completely covered in fabric. Plus, I love the pink colour – I’m inclined to wear these on a daily basis, not just for exercise.”
Lululemon Track That High-Rise 3-inch Lined Short
They may not be the most exciting colour, but these shorts from Lululemon are designed for both comfort and functionality. The leg opening is extra-roomy so you don’t have to worry about these restricting your thighs, and there’s a built in-liner to give you some extra support.
Lauren says: “I bought a pair of these Lululemon shorts when I first started running during lockdown, and three years later they’re still my go-to pair. The fit is comfortable, I love the fact that you can pull them in at the waist easily with the internal string and the little pocket is perfect for storing my keys. They’ve also got a built-in liner so you don’t need to worry about the fabric blowing up as you move.”

Brooks Chaser 5-inch Short
The Brooks Chaser is a fan favourite, and it’s the perfect pair if you don’t want shorts that are either super-long or super-short.
They have a wide, smooth waistband, and they’re made of wicking yet stretchy material that won’t chafe. In addition, they have a back pocket big enough for a phone and a nifty little elastic band to secure your keys.
Kiprun 2-in-1 Women’s Running Shorts
This pair has a tight, elastic inner layer and a lightweight, airy shell, making them perfect for people who want to avoid chafing.
They also have an average 4.5 out of 5 stars in reviews, and people have a lot of good things to say about them.

They also have two zip-up side pockets, so you’ll have plenty of space for your phone, keys and long-run gels.
