Ready to start your running journey? Here’s our pick of the best neutral and support shoes to shop now.
Despite what social media might have you believe, running doesn’t need to be a complicated, kit-heavy sport. All you really need to get started is a good sports bra, a solid pair of socks (trust us, its worth it) and, of course, those all-important running shoes.
But the world of running shoes can be overwhelming at the best of times, let alone when you’re relatively new to the sport or just want something on the simpler side. It’s easy to get sucked in by all the ‘super shoe’ hype and bright colours, but dropping hundreds of pounds on a racing shoe isn’t necessary unless you’re really looking to push it.
If your plans are more like a weekly ParkRun and some half-marathon training, then all you’ll really want (or, for that matter, need) is a comfortable, supportive shoe that feels good to run in and will support your body through all kinds of sessions.
What you’re looking for will vary depending on your running style, so it’s always worth going to get a gait analysis to see whether you’d benefit from a neutral or support shoe. Once that’s done, you’ll have plenty of shoes to choose from (check out our guide for more tips on picking the right ones for you), but these are our absolute favourites for everything from everyday training runs to a comfy race day.
For ease, we’ve sorted our pick of the best beginner running shoes into two categories: the best support shoes (for those who overpronate when they run) and the best neutral shoes.
The best neutral shoes for beginners
Saucony Ride 17
For dependable comfort, look no further than the Saucony Ride 17. Cushioned using the brand’s signature PWRRUN+ foam, the shoes provide an 8mm drop from heel to toe to help propel you forwards as you run.
Brooks Ghost 15
The Ghost 15s are one of Brooks’ most popular running shoes, and it’s not hard to see why. The air mesh upper pairs well with cushioning throughout to create a breathable and reliable running experience.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v13
New Balance’s Fresh Foam X 1080 don’t just look good, they perform well, too. With a rocker profile (meaning they curve upwards at the toe to create forward momentum) and a cushioned heel, they’re ideal for runners who love that bouncy sensation.
Asics Gel-Cumulus 26
The Gel-Cumulus is another ‘easy run’ classic, and Asics’ commitment to innovation means the latest model is its lightest and most cushioned yet. The heel-to-toe drop comes in at 8mm, perfect for giving you that little extra momentum when your energy levels are waning.
Strong Women senior writer Lauren Geall says: “The Gel-Cumulus are one of the most comfortable running shoes I own. They got me through half-marathon training (and the race itself), and they look and feel great. What more could you want?”
The best support shoes for beginners
Asics Gel-Kayano 30
Another Asics classic is the Gel-Kayano, the brand’s signature support shoe. With a new guidance system designed to better support your stride and extra cushioning for that bouncy feel, there’s a lot to love about these shoes.
Mizuno Wave Inspire 20
Mizuno might not be the first brand you think of when you think of running, but their Wave Inspires have so much to offer. Not only do they provide a slightly firmer feel than other shoes on this list, but they also boast a 12mm drop along with the brand’s signature Wave Plate, which provides that extra support.
Strong Women senior writer Lauren Geall says: “After experimenting with a few brands, I fell in love with a pair of Wave Inspires at the very start of my running journey. They’re incredibly supportive and strike the perfect balance between cushioning and responsiveness, so you feel like you’re really getting something back when you push off from the ground.”
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v13
The Fresh Foam X 860 v13 brings together two different types of foam throughout the midsole to provide that perfect balance between comfort and return. A firmer foam wedge known as a medial post provides the shoe’s stability.
Hoka Gaviota 5
If you’re looking for a shoe with a low heel-to-toe drop, then the HOKA Gaviota 5s are the answer. Just 6mm separates the back and front of the shoe, while the midsole is constructed with soft cushion around a supportive frame to prevent overpronation.
Saucony Guide 17
Saucony’s Guide 17 are designed to support daily movement, so they’re ideal for anyone who’s just starting out on their running journey or wants a shoe that can support them while walking, too. The heel-to-toe drop sits at 6mm, while the shoe’s higher side walls help you to feel fully supported.
