Cheese and its dairy cousins have long been blamed for causing nightmares, but is there any truth to the theory? We asked the experts.

While most foods get put under the societal microscope at one time or another, poor old cheese has been perpetually on trial for an alleged crime so callous that it causes sleepless nights. The theory is that cheese, when eaten close to bedtime, can cause nightmares of the nastiest kind: ghouls, gore and grief – you know the stuff.

But, while it’s widely accepted that the accused is guilty of the alleged sleep-associated offences, is there actually any truth to the theory? Or, is it time for cheese to be acquitted?
