And what about after a win? How do you celebrate?

My boyfriend and I are big foodies so we’ll usually try a new restaurant in or around Sheffield when I get home from a competition. While I’m still away at an event we [the team] always go out for a meal or drink to celebrate those who were successful, or just as a way of de-stressing post-event.

Being an athlete comes with its hard moments – what’s been the mentally toughest moment in your career to date, and how did you cope with it?

Fracturing and dislocating my ankle in 2022, right before the main Olympic qualification season, made me believe that I’d lost all hope of having a chance at getting a ticket to the Olympics. But I made sure I leaned on my chosen support network, and they really helped me through that period – whether it was doing my food shops and cooking for me, doing my rehab with me or reminding me why I love climbing and telling me I’d be back to it again soon.

It was also really helpful for me to break the comeback journey down and celebrate the little wins along the way, as it meant I stayed relatively motivated (not all the time, but enough of it). Making my first cup of tea for myself and being able to carry it to the sofa was a huge milestone for me!
