Finally, Nike has just confirmed that they'll sell Mary Earps' shirt in 'limited quantities'

3 min read

A petition urging Nike to reverse its decision not to sell the kit has won – the retailer has finally bowed to pressure.

At long last, Nike has kowtowed to pressure by agreeing to sell Mary Earp’s number 1 shirt. Throughout this year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup, fans have begged the retailer to sell her kit – but to no avail.

Even after Earps herself asked them to stock it, nothing happened. So, fans took matters into their own hands by starting a petition, which currently stands at more than 150,000 signatures.

But finally, in a statement today, Nike has said it had now “secured limited quantities of goalkeeping jerseys to be sold”.

Earps was one of the standout players in this year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup – being awarded the Golden Glove after Sunday’s final.

In addition to her worldie World Cup final save, she blocked multiple on-target shots from Spain’s attackers and other teams throughout the tournament (including an incredible tip-over-the-bar). She’s been a solid safe pair of hands for the Lionesses since before the 2022 Euros, and has inspired the next generation of players to pick up a pair of gloves.

And until today, fans have been unable to get their hands on a replica of her shirt.

Whether you’re a seasoned football fan or just getting into the sport, being able to purchase and wear the shirt of your favourite player is one of the best bits about following the game.

Most of England’s home and away kits are available on the Nike website, with numbered versions of the players’ kits available on the official England store.

Earps was named the Best Fifa Women’s Goalkeeper 2022 earlier in the year, and now she’s the first goalkeeper from the England women’s team to compete in the final of a World Cup.

To say this is disappointing is an understatement

Earps has been instrumental in the Lionesses’ success both at last summer’s Euros and this year’s tournament; the absence of her kit from the line-up plays into the false but pervasive narrative that fans don’t want to buy into the goalkeeping hype.

This problematic assumption is something Earps spoke about in a recent interview with Stylist. “I feel extremely passionate about making goalkeeping accessible, making it visible,” she explained. “It’s not in people’s marketing strategy – everybody’s convinced goalkeeping doesn’t sell. And I think that’s a false narrative: my shirts sold out in the Manchester United club store.

“Hopefully, I can go some way in dispelling that myth. I’ve got to do a lot to change a lot of archaic narratives, but I’m working on it.”

Luckily, Earps isn’t the only one working to make a change. Since she spoke out about her frustration at Nike’s decision not to sell her shirt – something she called “hugely disappointing and very hurtful” – fans have worked hard to make their frustration heard, with a petition demanding that the sports label make Earps’ kit available to buy. It now boasts over 50,000 signatures. That led FA boss Mark Bullingham to reveal last week that there is a “plan in place” to resolve the issue.

Last weekend, Nike said: “Nike is committed to women’s football and we’re excited by the passion around this year’s tournament and the incredible win by the Lionesses to make it into the final. We are proudly offering the best of Nike innovation and services to our federation partners and hundreds of athletes.

“We hear and understand the desire for a retail version of a goalkeeper jersey and we are working towards solutions for future tournaments, in partnership with Fifa and the federations. The fact that there’s a conversation on this topic is testament to the continued passion and energy around the women’s game and we believe that’s encouraging.”

That’s not something that would ever happen in the men’s game, and it’s frustrating to see support for such a brilliant player sidelined after repeated calls from both Earps and her fans. Having the kit available for sale would be a hugely important moment.
