Thanks to indoor heating and outdoor chilliness, you’re never quite at the right temperature. The solution? Strategic layering.
As winter gets colder and the office (and any other indoor space, thank goodness) turns its heating on, the what-to-wear conundrum of winter only gets more tricky.
The temperature variant inevitably means that cold weather gear gets you far too warm, while lightweight pieces aren’t warm enough for the winter chill. There is one simple solution however: strategic layering.
Pairing chic separates together in easily removable layers solves the problem, whilst keeping the style stakes high. From layering your coats and knits for the weekend, to office appropriate tailoring layering, there’s a solution for all eventualities.
Coat Check
Weather ready: One coat just isn’t enough. Top your anorak with a voluminous puffa and add a hoodie or funnel-neck sweatshirt underneath, for extra protection against the elements.
Proportion play: Never underestimate the power of a sneaky layer. Wear a blazer over a long-sleeved mazi dress then top with a long coat: ideally a loose style to accommodate the blazer.
Winter update: Make your denim jacket work for winter by wearing it buttoned up under your coat like a shirt. Add a layer underneath and a layer on top for easy shedding when needed.
Office Appropriate
Hidden gems: A skinny puffa is the lightweight layer fashion editors swear by. This one fits perfectly under your work coat, without looking too casual for the office.
New necklines: Try a thin turtleneck under your work shirt (or dress) for a subtle shot of warmth and extra interest for your neckline. Top with a smart trench coat for a streamlined silhouette.
Dressed Up: Tights just aren’t warm enough? Take a cue from the catwalks and wear your dress over slim suit trousers with the matching blazer over the top for a pulled together look.
New Gen Knits
Accessorise: Make like the biggest street-style stars and wear your jumper as an accessory. Wrap it around your neck as a scarf, or knot it around your waist or diagonally across your body.
Button Up: This season’s styling trick is to button your cardigan up to the top and wear as a jumper for extra warmth. Add an easily removable silk neck scarf so you can dial it up or down.
Do the Double: When cosiness is required, layer an oversized chunky cardigan over an equally chunky roll-neck. Keep legs toasty with knee-high boots under a midi skirt.
