Put away your skinnies – wide-leg jeans are officially the silhouette of a/w 2019 and here’s how to wear them…
Time was, skinnies were the jeans of choice, but these days (thankfully) one can cast one’s denim net a little wider.
The most versatile? The wide-legged silhouette.
Born in the 70s, they evoke images of Farah Fawcett on that skateboard and come with a corresponding dose of laid-back cool.
And, unlike roller skates and space hoppers, this is one vintage trend we’ll happily revisit in 2019.
Cut high in the waist – to give the roomy silhouette shape and guard against builder’s bum or midriff flashing – they are figure-skimming, leg-lengthening and oh-so adaptable.
Universally flattering, the wide-legged shape also taps into pre-autumn’s volume trend – perfect.
And, whether you’re off to work or out for drinks, these jeans will look the part.
One pair of trousers, four looks - here’s how…
1. For the office
Originally the ultimate workwear staple, the new wave of elevated denim makes jeans once again ready for work.
These days, the driving factor is style rather than durability, and the wide-legged silhouette of Uniqlo’s new Curved Jeans is a case in point.
Sleek, smart and terribly sophisticated when paired with a longline shirt (nothing says “means business” like pinstripe) – simply button up and flick the cuffs.
Team with classic bit-buckle loafers and an oversized blazer for instant office attire.
After-work drinks? Just add giant earrings, a flick of eyeliner, a slick of lippie and you’re good to go.
2. For drinks with friends
When you want to look nonchalant enough for an after-work wine, but dressed-up enough that you’re ready for impromptu plans, wide-legged jeans are just the ticket.
We suggest tucking in a printed peasant blouse with voluminous sleeves – a nod to the capacious denim’s vintage origins (Woodstock, anyone?).
Smocked cuffs elevate a simple style to evening-ready, and come winter, layer over a skinny rib roll-neck for more 70s vibes.
A sliver of chunky suede heel beneath a wide leg cuff manages to be dressed-up enough for after dark, but laid-back enough for the pub.
The final flourish? A colour-pop bag, of course – vivid orange looks great with dark denim.
3. For weekend lazing
Ah, wide-leg denim in its natural habitat.
Your jeans will be right at home sitting in the pub, kicking back on the sofa or walking the dog to somewhere else you can sit.
A boxy sweater is the perfect match – keep it on the slim-fit side and tuck in the front to add shape to the silhouette.
Add a pair of minimal trainers and a padded puffer, and you’re ready for the English winter to do its thing.
4. For date night
Hot date? Pull on the wide-legged jeans once again.
Up the ante on these wear-everywhere trews with a sleek silk blouse – bonus points for a structured shape.
Depending on where you’re heading, leave loose for an easy breezy mood or tuck in for maximum waist-cinching and leg-lengthening.
Keep accessories simple. We have rarely met a pair of oversized earrings that didn’t instantly transform simple to sleek – see them as your fast track to evening cool.
Minimal strappy sandals look dressed-up, but a chunky heel avoids looking OTT.
Easy to wear and on-trend for autumn/winter, the new Curved Jeans from Uniqlo are available to buy now.
