“I tried Sophie Turner’s cycling shorts trend for a week, and this is what happened”
By Megan Murray
Rosanna Cole, Stylist’s video producer and director, tried wearing cycling shorts everyday for a week. This is how she got on.
No longer relegated to your gym bag, cycling shorts have become both the comfiest, and chicest, item to pull off this summer.
This week Sophie Turner was spotted donning a simple white pair, and the look has been all over our Instagram feeds for months, thus proving its popularity. But although we love the skin-tight silhouette and there’s certainly no denying this item’s versatility, we’d say that trying to don a different pair everyday for a whole week could be a challenge.
It’s a challenge, however, that Stylist’s wonderful video producer and director Rosanna was happy to take on. Stomping off to work every day, she styled the tricky fashion item out in a number of different ways, from a smart, all-black ensemble to a flamboyant, animal-print look.

Speaking to us ahead of the challenge, Rosanna said: “I’ve seen cycling shorts a lot on Instagram, the catwalks and at festivals especially, and I think they look really cool in those environments.
“I’m just a bit apprehensive about how it’s going to translate into my office life and my commute.”
Day 1
“I’m easing myself in with a simply black pair. First impressions – very tight, doesn’t hide a lot. I definitely felt self-conscious walking out the door and going on the tube, but as soon as I entered the office I had quite a few people come up to me and say that they were really feeling my outfit. Which made me feel a lot more confident.”

Day 2
“I’m really not sure about this one. I’m feeling quite self-conscious and very exposed, I’m going to walk to work as quickly as possible and get behind my desk. Today definitely feels like more of challenge than yesterday’s outfit because there’s no jacket to cover the butt area. It’s literally there for everyone to see.”

Day 3
“Today I’m going to up the challenge with some animal print. I usually love wearing animal prints, so I don’t think it’s going to be too far out of my comfort zone. Although I am thinking it’s going to draw a lot more attention to the butt area. So let’s see how that goes!”
Day 4
“So today has been good in the world of cycling shorts. I really like this outfit, I received a lot of compliments. Someone said I look really cool, so that’s always nice. What I’m really noticing this week is how comfortable I’ve felt. I didn’t really think about that before I started things, but even after a big lunch you’re like ‘I’m wearing expandable bottoms, it doesn’t matter!’.”

Day 5
“For the final day I am going to try and up the challenge even more and wear something I will probably never wear to work again. I’ve got a black glittery pair of cycling shorts today.”
