Rainy days don’t have to bring you down. Stylist’s fashion writer, Soraya Gaied Chortane, has compiled a foolproof outfit formula to keep you stylish and dry, no matter the weather.
You know what’s worse than getting caught in the rain? Getting caught in the rain while totally unprepared. We’ve all been there, dressed to the nines and feeling fabulous… and then the skies open up. Suddenly, your chic ensemble is more of a drenched disaster than runway-ready. The unpredictability of the weather is one of the most frustrating parts of autumn, and it’s one that can give your fashion game a downgrade in an instant.
But the rain needn’t dampen your fashion spirit. All is not lost! I’ve put together a wet-weather-proof outfit formula that never lets me down. Think waterproof trench coats, statement skirts to brighten up the grey skies and high-performing stomper boots. Layering is key when it comes to dressing wet-weather outfits – ribbed roll-necks under sleek rain jackets will rarely let you down.
Ahead, discover how to put together looks that will keep you looking and most importantly, feeling stylish, no matter what the forecast throws your way.

Finding a jacket that’s both functional and fashionable can be quite a challenge. It’s tough to strike a balance without looking like you’re ready for a mountain expedition on your morning coffee run. When it comes to choosing the best raincoats, it’s important to pay close attention to the materials you select and invest in quality. When the rain starts, there’s little point in cutting corners and just grabbing any hooded coat. With the inevitable downpours, it’s crucial to get this right; your entire outfit can hinge on choosing the right raincoat.
A trusty trench coat is a staple in every fashion editor’s wardrobe, earning its spot as a go-to for style and practicality. My top pick is this fabulous double-breasted offering from Reiss (below). It has a removable hooded insert and a tie-waist that will come in handy to keep the chill out.

BUY NOWWhile undeniably stylish, traditional trench coats often fall short in torrential downpours, which is why I lean towards more functional alternatives for uncompromising protection. With a water-repellent finish and relaxed silhouette, Uniqlo’s cotton blend parka is a great option that will shield you against a heavy downfall.
Rains’s outerwear is just as stylish but also incredibly practical, thanks to the brand’s signature PU fabric and welded seams. The design is easy to wear with an elegant drape and available in 12 rich autumnal shades. Unisex with a casual, contemporary fit, it has concealed vents for breathable comfort. So sleek.

But what to wear underneath all that waterproofing? Keep it light and pay close attention to materials. Ribbed jumpers and fine knits will do the trick to shield you from every eventuality.

While wide-leg trousers look great for dry days, turned-up jeans are a better option for wet pavements. We’ve all been there in a perfect pair of wool wide-leg trousers only to have the ends get splashed by puddles and rainwater. One genius hack I’ve discovered is to elasticate the hem of my slouchy, oversized trousers using hair bands or scrunchies around my ankles. It’s surprisingly stylish and gives the trousers a cuffed look.
Another favourite of mine for rainy-day weather is the mini skirt and tights combo. It’s a failsafe option and always looks polished. The best part is you can avoid wet hemlines all together. This Mango option has a micro-hem length and sweet pinstripe design – pair them with these sheer-effect thermal tights from Calzedonia. They’re such a staple for the colder weather: try combining thermal tights against the skin and a second pair of tights in black sheer 30 denier to wear on top.

Wearing boots in the rain is a game-changer. First, they keep your feet dry and warm, which is crucial for comfort. No one enjoys sloshing around in soggy shoes. Boots also provide better traction on slippery surfaces, preventing any embarrassing slips. If you prefer something more versatile, sleek ankle boots in neutral tones are a great choice. Try these ones below from Charles & Keith and Hush.
