Let's face it, having Vivienne Westwood design your uniform is pretty damn cool.

The British designer has brought her own unique brand of va va voom to Virgin Atlantic this week, with the unveiling of the airline's new crew outfits.

The hotly anticipated collaboration between Richard Branson's airline and one of fashion's biggest icons was announced last year but has only just officially launched.

Westwood attended a glitsy launch in London last night to mark the occasion, accompanied by Branson and a host of celebrity guests, including Blondie and Mandela actress Naomie Harris.

Westwood, a doyenne of the fashion world, is famed for her flamboyant designs. The one-time Queen of Punk aimed to bring a pioneering, maverick spirit to the airline's iconic red uniforms.

The designer and her team created a feminine and flattering silhouette for female crew and a sharp Savile Row inspired three-piece suit with a contemporary twist, in a deep burgundy Oxford weave wool for male employees.

We particularly like the gorgeous shoes the female crew get to wear, providing a twist on the iconic Vivienne Westwood hourglass heel.

The double-breasted "drape coats" with cinched waist and oversized collars are also pretty beautiful, uniform or no.

Westwood, who has seduced the fashion industry with her daring and unconventional take on style for over 40 years, was inspired by 40s French couture cutting techniques and classic tailoring heritage in creating the uniforms.

"My clothes have always got a very strong dynamic rapport with the body- they are very body conscious, they help you to look glamorous, more hourglass, more woman," the designer said. "I design things to help people to hopefully express their personality."

Many items of the new uniform have been produced using recycled materials, including recycled bags for the ground staff that were made for Virgin through the Ethical Fashion Initiative in Kenya, in collaboration with the International Trade Centre. They were made using recycled canvas, reused roadside banners, unused leather off-cuts, and recycled brass, produced in the Kibera slum, Nairobi.

"I am always trying to find fabrics that are more friendly to the environment - working with Virgin Atlantic they managed to research into this and find more eco fabrics," said Westwood.

Vivienne Westwood with Richard Branson...

Richard Branson said the airline wanted to work with a team who shared "our spirit of adventure, who believe in challenging the status quo and creating something truly memorable."

"Our current uniform has been around for more than 10 years and we have seen other airlines start to copy it," he said last year.
