For many of us, Topshop was the brand that defined our teenage years: Joni jeans, quirky three-for-two socks and Kate Moss collections that made you feel like you’d cracked the fashion code.

For my friends and me, the Oxford Circus flagship store was more like a playground than a retail space. It wasn’t unusual to walk in for eyeliner and leave with a fresh piercing, a new haircut and a shopping bag full of outfits that made us feel on top of the world.

So, when Topshop’s stores closed in 2020, it felt like a permanent goodbye. While its presence on Asos helped soften the blow, it never quite measured up to riffling through those racks and experiencing the buzz of the store in person.

But now, after nearly five years, Topshop appears to be coming back. “We’ve missed you too,” the brand teased in a recent social media post. And for many of us, that excitement is impossible to ignore: Topshop is finally returning and it feels like the fashion world is about to get a little bit brighter again.

“I think we all have core memories of meeting friends outside ‘big’ Topshop. It was always the brand to be relied on for fashion-forward pieces and was so loved. It still is, the range on Asos has been brilliant recently,” says Stylist’s fashion director, Lucy Reber.

While we don’t know yet exactly what its return will mean, until it’s back in full force, I’m doing what any Topshop girl would do – shopping the best pieces now. Because if this comeback is anything like the store we used to know and love, the best bits won’t last long.
