From classic crew necks to statement sweaters, these are the jumpers Stylist’s fashion team will be wearing through winter.
With January on the horizon, a smart wardrobe addition to make now is a classic knit. From Uniqlo cashmere crew necks to cropped cable knits, these chic forever pieces will elevate your winter look in an instant. The best knits offer a combination of breathability and warmth, confirming their place as the humble heroes of our cold-weather wardrobes.
When it comes to picking the perfect knit, Stylist’s fashion team’s top tip is to focus on material. We love soft-to-the-touch wool, cashmere and mohair for winter, all of which will see you through the season in style. Natural fabrics wear brilliantly and will last when properly cared for. They also allow air to circulate, which helps regulate body temperature and keeps you cool and comfortable too (essential for the winter commute).
Elegant pieces from independent brands such as &Daughter and Navy Grey are heirlooms to be kept and shared. Luckily for us, the high street is catching up with the type of knitwear we want to buy now too. Opt for neutral shades if you’re looking for a timeless knit: grey and navy are universal favourites that will work well with what is already in your wardrobe. “I would far rather invest in a well-made knit that I’ll wear countless times every week, than more of the moment trend-led pieces,” says Stylist’s executive fashion director Kitty McGee.

Reiss Etta cropped cable knit jumper with mohair in charcoal
“I am very fond of a cable knit charcoal jumper. The design twist on this, cropped rather than oversized and with a chic fold-over collar, makes it special. I’ll be wearing it with wide-leg tailored trousers.”

Navy Grey ‘the Lorton 008’ jumper
“The shape of this Navy Grey jumper is timeless and perfect for daytime with denim. It will also add a cool edge to a bias-cut satin skirt and velvet Mary Janes for an evening twist. This is one of Navy Grey’s limited edition pieces, hand-finished in Nottinghamshire.”

Uniqlo 100% cashmere crew neck jumper
“I am such a fan of Uniqlo cashmere – you can’t argue with a cashmere jumper for under £80. I’ve been living in this pale grey crew neck whenever the weather feels colder. The perfect thing over a crisp white T-shirt with a medium chunky gold chain.”
Cos abstract cable-knit merino wool jumper
“I love this modern take on a cable knit, with the forest green swoosh through the centre. It feels formal enough for the office, worn over a crisp white shirt and tailored pinstripe trousers.”

Jaeger pure merino wool funnel neck jumper
“A great navy jumper is chic and timeless, and I love this chunky merino wool style from Jaeger. It will look great with tonal blue jeans and gold hoop earrings.”
