7 thong sandals that will elevate all of your favourite summer outfits

Retro-inspired and yet beyond chic, this season’s ‘it’ shoe is the inimitable thong sandal
Everyone from Fendi to Proenza Schouler and Versace continued to rep the nineties on the spring / summer ‘19 catwalks. Rather than bold, playful interpretations of the trend as seen in previous seasons, this season is more about a chic nod to nineties style than full on primary prints. Think more minimal Calvin Klein than clunky Buffalo boots if you will.
A major takeaway trend from the catwalks was slimmer, more delicate footwear options; now dubbed the ‘barely there sandal’, a style that net-a-porter alone have bought 15,000 pairs of this season. Net-a-Porter’s global buying director Elizabeth von der Goltz explains, “The ‘Barely There Sandal’ is amongst some our most popular shoe styles at Net-a-Porter and due to the high demand we’ve continued to heavily back the sophisticated and refreshing trend by launching more than 160 new styles this season which. They’re easy to style with multiple outfits and the practical heel height makes the sandals suitable for numerous occasions, whether it’s for work purposes or an evening out on the town.
The elevated thong sandal is the newest and more directional update on the multi-strap sandal, and the perfect partner to summer’s more fashion forward silhouettes. Wear it with everything from billowing, ankle-grazing maxi length dresses to tailoring and the divisive cycling short. Thanks to it’s minimal shape and wearable heel height it works as well with bold on-trend looks as it does with straight-leg jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Whatever you wear it with; it’s the ultimate footwear choice this season.
