From Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers to Beatrix Kiddo's yellow trainers in Kill Bill, we count the ten shoes that are, in their own right, the stars of their films.

1. Ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz

"And remember, never let those ruby slippers off your feet for a moment, or you will be at the mercy of the Wicked Witch of the West," says Glinda to Dorothy. There are only four pairs of the original ruby slippers known to exist, including a pair owned by the Smithsonian, which attract millions of visitors to the museum every year.

2. Glass slippers in Cinderella

"The prince sire! Swears he'll marry nobody but the girl who fits this slipper," shouts the Grand Duke to the King. On launching his very own interpretation of the glass slipper, Christian Louboutin has said, "Cinderella is not only an iconic character when it comes to beauty, grace and fairytale love, but also shoes".

3. Over-the-knee boots in Pretty Woman

Julia Roberts forever became a reference point for over-the-knee boots after this 1990 film. The patent black heels are a symbol for the film and the charismatic prostitute, Vivian Ward, who wins the heart of everyone around her.

4. Yellow trainers in Kill Bill

Beatrix Kiddo's (also known as The Bride) yellow jumpsuit wouldn't have been the same without her matching Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 sneakers. In fact, they represent the formidable character with the words "F*** U" inscribed in her soles.

5. Blue Manolo Blahnik's in Sex and the City

At the climax of the hit TV series' first movie, Mr Big takes Carrie's hand, gets down on one knee and says "Carrie Bradshaw, the love of my life, will you marry me?" To close the deal he reaches for the Cobalt Blue Manolo Blahnik Hangisi Satin pumps and slips them onto her. We've not forgotten those shoes ever since.

6. Loafers in Funny Face

Audrey Hepburn's role in Funny Face shined the spotlight on slip-on loafers (these ones are designed by Salvatore Ferragamo) and flats soon became her signature shoe. The star originally rejected the white socks during the film’s famous dance sequence. After she saw the movie for the first time, she sent director Stanley Donen a note that read: “You were right about the socks. Love, Audrey.”

7. Mary Janes in Clueless

Pair white knee-high socks with Mary Jane shoes and you instantly have Cher, the Beverly Hills teenager who was the undisputed queen of high school. Clueless’s costume designer Mona May said, "The Mary Janes felt to us like the quintessentially youthful shoe… that a girl can wear, maybe even with a shorter miniskirt, and it keeps her very young, very sweet”.

8. Red ballet shoes in The Red Shoes

This critically acclaimed 1948 film, which is loosely based on a Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name, features a ballet about a pair of enchanted shoes that cannot be taken off.

9. 18th century heels in Mary Antoinette

Director Sofia Coppola had Manolo Blahnik create hundreds of specially made shoes for the film, including this blue pair tried on by Marie Antoinette, played by Kirsten Dunst. Serve them on a plate with macaroons and bring them here, please.

10. Prada heels in The Devil Wears Prada

As Emily Blunt's eponymous character, Emily, frantically runs around preparing the office for her boss' arrival, said boss steps out of a car wearing a pair of fierce red pumps. There couldn't have been a more fitting way to introduce Ms Miranda Priestly.
