Farewell Stan Smiths: the new must-have trainers we’re all lusting over
By Harriet Hall

We’ve been enjoying a steady, monogamous relationship with our Stan Smiths for a while now, but there’s a new (old) pair of trainers on the block that we’re hankering after.
In the latest development in the Nike-Adidas trainer wars, we’ve found new allegiance (we’re fickle, you see) – with the Nike Cortez – and we predict they’ll be all over fashionable feet in no time.
First launched in 1972 as a simple running shoe and celebrated for their simplicity and comfort, the Nike Cortez relaunched last year on Nike.com, but it wasn't until recently that we really started to take notice.
The Cortez are available in their classic colourway of white leather, with primary colour tones of pillar box red tick, blue foam sole and yellow detailing, as well as a range of other colours to suit most styles – and we’re lusting over them, big time.
Fashion bloggers have already started coveting the sneakers, including Chiara Ferragni (AKA The Blonde Salad) who instagrammed herself in a pair this week.
Whether it is the nostalgia of classic trainers or that women are frankly tired of being pushed into impossibly uncomfortable shoes by designers, revelling the cushiony comfort of kicks, it doesn’t matter – trainers have been back with a vengeance over the past few years.
It all started when pioneering Céline creative director, Phoebe Philo brought trainers back into fashion consciousness in 2012. Having always shunned heels for more comfortable feminist flats, Philo made skate shoes chic. Soon enough, every high street brand had released their own version – no-doubt to the disdain of actual skaters, who probably shivered when they saw the range of velvet, sequined and patent styles that came out across the high street.
By 2013, we were all about New Balance. Pretending we hadn’t spent years spurning them – happily donning black, grey and burgundy pairs to offset the smartness of camel coats and tailored trousers.
For a while, we even enjoyed a range of Nikes - from the Air Max (because you simply can’t go wrong), to the soft ballet-style of the Roche Run.
It was the return of the Stan Smith in 2014 that really caught our attention. Designed in 1971 and endorsed by the eponymous American tennis star, the trainers were loved for their minimal, clean design, on which perforations alluded to the Adidas trio of stripes – without shouting their branding too loudly. Philo brought the Adidas classic into the fashionable consciousness and that was it – we were in love.
But after years of dedication and an admirable reign, our Stan Smiths are all starting to look a little tired and we’ve been on the lookout for something new.
Enter Cortez.
