These are 5 of the top runway trends we’re channelling for summer

Sheer styling, sporty collegiate style and summer sequins were just a handful of trends that caught our eye on the spring/summer runways.

Now we’re firmly in spring with the warmer weather gracing us with its presence, it’s time to look back to the spring/summer catwalks for some much-needed style inspiration. Showcased in September last year, plenty of pieces are now available to buy, with key trends seeping into almost every store and at every price point.

Unsurprisingly, we’re still firmly in the Y2K-style realm with capri pants and kitten heels remaining popular. Evolving the retro look, we’re also starting to see sports-ready collegiate pieces, as pushed by Victoria Beckham, Miu Miu and The Row coming through.

Sheer styling, a key trend spotted on the more recent autumn/winter runways began trickling through in the spring/summer season with Carolina Herrera, Coperni, 16Arlington and Supriya Lele stepping into sheer skirts. And sequins were given a summer upgrade thanks to 16Arlington, Marc Jacobs and Rabanne.

Below, we’ve listed our five favourite spring/summer trends you’re sure to be seeing everywhere.

All-white outfits

All-white outfits have long been a go-to look for summer, with plenty of people, royals including, using the simple shade to elevate their warm-weather wardrobes, so it was no surprise to see the trend take centre stage on the spring/summer runways. Coming through strongly in a number of collections, including Valentino, Stella McCartney, Gabriela Hearst and Michael Kors, Stylist’s fashion team have already compiled a guide to recreate the look with ease.

Another trend we’ve seen a number of times already is the back-to-school style, with plenty of polo shirts, caps and varsity jackets. Led by Victoria Beckham, Miu Miu, The Row and Ottolinger on the spring/summer runways, it’s all about thick-striped rugby shirts, trainers and laidback looks. It’s also an easy way to introduce more colours into your wardrobe via sports team-like shades.

Sheer styling

Sheer styling was one of the strongest trends for autumn/winter 2024 with Saint Laurent, Valentino, Mugler and Chloé sending full see-through looks down the runway. Although, it was spring/summer when we started to see the trend take its final form. Mainly in the form of skirts, Carolina Herrera, Coperni, 16Arlington and Supriya Lele opted for the barely-there fabric, often styled with tonal tops or thin, loose-fitting jumpers.

Bermuda shorts

Shorts are a solid summer staple for good reason. Offering a slightly cooler alternative to jeans and trousers, they’re a great go-to for a whole host of occasions. This season, along with the short-short, designers brought the longer Bermuda style back. Miu Miu leaned into fabric forms, Jil Sander offered suiting-like styles and Loewe gave us pretty, pleated shapes.

Standout sequins

While sequins may seem like a party-season piece we whip out during winter, the sparkly style was in no short supply on the spring/summer runways. 16Arlington focused on large, disc-like sequins on skirts and tops, Marc Jacobs made a case for disco-like studs and Rabanne really went all-out in sparkly silver. To make it a little more wearable for everyday, brands paired sequin pieces with everyday basics such as white vest tops and simple sandals.
