The street style set has spoken: layering is a key look for the transitional season. From knotted cardigans to double-T-shirts, here’s how the fashion crowd is making it their own.
Every season, Miu Miu never fails to set the tone for what we’ll all be wearing. From bag charms making a comeback to ballet flats and 90s-style eyewear, that’s Miu Miu for you – always with its finger on the pulse.
But it wasn’t just the brand’s autumn/winter 2025 catwalk looks that had everyone talking. Outside the show, some of our favourite street style stars debuted a new styling trick that looks set to take over: offbeat layering.
This isn’t your typical minimal shirt hemline peeking beneath a jumper or a roll-neck popping out beneath a collar. No, the style set has taken layering to the next level. Instead of dressing for colder weather, they’re taking to intentional layering: tying cardigans across their fronts, tucking shirts inside tank tops and stacking multiple T-shirts for a lived-in look.
It’s a look that’s slightly reminiscent of that Friends scene when Joey wears his entire wardrobe at once, but this time around, it’s way cooler and much more deliberate.
Whether inspired by the catwalk or the street style outside the show, this is the time to experiment. After all, when Miu Miu’s It girls approve of a trend, it’s only a matter of time before we all follow suit, says Stylist’s Kitty McGee. “The attendees are often younger and more playful with their styling, and whether they’re layering clashing colours or stacking multiple accessories, it’s always really fun to see.”
Looking for more inspiration? Here, Stylist highlights three street-style outfits from outside Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2025 show to inform your next layered look.
Lean into print
It might seem a little strange at first (and potentially a bit sweaty), but the style set is embracing the layering trend – and they’re doing it well. Maximalists will love this look because it involves combining textures, colours, patterns and prints. Take a cue from Livia Nunes (below) and stack multiple plaid polos over one another. It creates a sporty yet chic vibe, especially when paired with edgy boots and a draped midi skirt.
To make this look work, balance the boldness of the stacked T-shirts by keeping your bottom half simple, eg straight-leg jeans or a tailored skirt. Keep the colours complementary – neutral tones with a pop of something brighter works wonders.

Layer over tailored pieces
Another way to tap into this street style-approved trend is by mixing tailored pieces with lighter layers. A pleated skirt, for example, or a double-breasted blazer or crisp shirt layered under a ribbed tank like Demi Singleton (below). This combo softens the corporate look, taking it from the office to the streets with ease.
For extra punch, finish with sporty accessories like chunky trainers or the on-trend hybrid ballet flats. It’s the perfect mix of smart and casual.

Get experimental with your knitwear
One styling trick we can’t get enough of is the visible layering technique, where you simply tie a cardigan or jumper over a vest or dress. It’s simple but brilliant – as so many of the best things are. This is one of those fashion-forward looks that makes you feel like an It girl. It’s cool, unexpected and gives the impression that you have a real knack for styling, even if you haven’t managed to convince yourself of that.
To pull this look off, make sure your cardigan or jumper is oversized and cosy; it should add texture without feeling bulky. The key is to keep the layers visible and let the jumper rest naturally over your top. Pair with a simple white dress or a slim-fit tank to avoid overwhelming the outfit (as demonstrated by Tamara Kalinic below).
