Sheer styling was a standout trend for Venice Film Festival – this is how we’re wearing it

Amal Clooney, Eva Longoria and Jenna Ortega all reached for a key runway look, and it’s proving plenty popular.
The 81st Venice International Film Festival is well underway, and some of our favourite actors have descended on the water-filled city to showcase the latest cinematic showstoppers. Kicking off the event was Tim Burton’s Halloween-ready Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Stylist’s cover star Catherine O’Hara stepped onto the red carpet perfectly in character with a chic black and white co-ord. Clearly, fashion is at the forefront of this season’s celebrations.
However, as with all large groups of people, whether AirPod-clad on their commutes or perfectly poised on the red carpet, clothing trends start to emerge. So it’s perhaps unsurprising that Amal Clooney, Stella Maxwell, Eva Longoria, Diana Del Bufalo and O’Hara’s co-star Jenna Ortega stepped out in similar looks, incorporating one of the biggest trends of the season: see-through fabrics.

Stemming from the autumn/winter runways that were showcased at the beginning of this year, sheer fabrics proved plenty popular. So much so that according to fashion search engine Tagwalk, 38% of the Valentino collection and 53% of the Chloé collection comprised transparent touches and Simone Rocha, Eudon Choi, 16Arlington and David Koma all included see-through styles.
Solidifying the trend even further, Copenhagen Fashion Week designers, including Remain, OpéraSport and Baum Und Pferdgarten, kept the see-through look going in their spring/summer collections, highlighting how the trend is showing no sign of slowing down.
So, spotting it on the Venice Film Festival red carpet isn’t all that surprising. The nearly naked look is certainly much loved.

Although while the skin-baring style may look particularly striking on the red carpet or the runway, the key question is how do we wear it in real life without looking like we left half of our outfit at home? Well, it’s really all about layering.
Jeans, leggings or a thick pair of tights will instantly make any see-through fabric more modest, as will a vest top or T-shirt. This will help you lean into the look without feeling overexposed while walking down the high street.
If you are looking to truly lean into the transparent trend without wanting to cover up, a big pair of knickers and a matching bra will work wonders – just look to Jenna Ortega for inspiration.
