9 sheer skirts, shirts and dresses to style now and wear throughout autumn/winter

Chloé, Valentino and Rotate are all turning to transparent fabrics, so the high street has followed suit.
If someone suggested we walk down the street in just our underwear, we’d bawl, run away or simply laugh in their face – and I suspect we’re not alone in those feelings. However, give us a sheer layer to wear on top and we’d suddenly feel incredibly chic.
Standing out on the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks and the most recent Copenhagen Fashion Week spring/summer 25 shows, see-through fabrics are topping plenty of trend lists. In fact, to put it in numbers, fashion search engine Tagwalk shared that 38% of the Valentino collection and over half of the Chloé collection comprised transparent touches, proving the larger labels are leading the way with the lightweight layers.
If you’re not sold on baring all, the beauty of the translucent trend comes from layering. Dresses are shrugged over slips or jeans, shirts sit over vests and under waistcoats and skirts stand out when layered over leggings, shorts or, if you’re feeling a little brave, a big pair of knickers. Just keep scrolling to see nine of our favourite styles that will see you own the trend with ease.
Mango semi-transparent chiffon dress with ruffles
Sheer fabrics, plenty of ruffles and a pretty pastel colour palette – this Mango frock fully leans into the bohemian trend that’s making a comeback. Whether styled over jeans, leggings or a swimsuit, it’s one of our favourite dresses.

Alo sheer effusion button-down long-sleeve
If you look to Alo for activewear finds, you may be surprised to learn it also stocks a handful of more fashion-forward pieces, such as this silky-feel sheer shirt. Whether layered over a white bra and worn with jeans or slightly peeking out under a waistcoat, it’s a striking upgrade from standard cotton.
French Connection sequin midi A-line skirt
Sheer styling pieces make quite the statement, meaning they go hand in hand with sequins to work incredibly well for fancier affairs. This pretty pink midi skirt will liven up any look, especially weddings or fun parties.
Asos Design Curve manipulated mesh overlay one-shoulder midi dress
If you’re wanting to gently tiptoe into the sheer styling trend, opt for an item that includes a sturdy slip, such as this Asos vibrant orange option.

Reformation Vina dress
Reformation is a great place to start any occasion wear hunt and this white sheer shift dress does not disappoint. Gently touching on the see-through fabric trend, its opaque lining makes it appear more modest.
River Island black mesh sheer bodysuit
One great way to wear mesh fabrics is to incorporate them as a base layer into plenty of looks, whether that’s styled underneath a baggy T-shirt, a longer-length dress or a more formal-fitting waistcoat. This fitted bodysuit will do just that, adding a unique twist to a whole host of outfits.
Intimately moon-phase midi slip
Whether worn over jeans, shorts or a big pair of knickers, this fancy frock will slot into any floaty, romantic or boho wardrobes. Plus it comes in two other shades, including all-black.
Simply Be green printed mesh maxi dress
Available in sizes 10 to 30, this green printed dress is sure to work its way into several wardrobe styles. We love that it can work for any occasion, whether paired with a trusty trainer for a laidback look or elevated with a strappy silver sandal.
The Frankie Shop peri sheer midi skirt
The Frankie Shop has a knack for creating fashion-forward pieces that feel like basics, thanks to their chic ways of styling. This sheer midi skirt, for example, looks perfectly suited to daily wear with a sweatshirt as it would with sky-high heels and a matching shirt.
Won Hundred Alba gradient round-neck sheer mesh top
Contrasting black and blue shades as well as fabric textures, there’s more to this see-through top than immediately meets the eye. We’d style ours with a black bra (or vest if being more modest) and baggy denim to really lean into the laidback look.
