Long live the LBD: 1,000 women were consulted and this is apparently the perfect party dress

As much as we don’t like to be predictable, LBD is style shorthand that’s entered into popular fashion lexicon for a reason.

While we’ll all have different individual pieces we turn to in times of sartorial panic, the little black dress is an enduring wardrobe staple, party season or no. Work, play, everything between – OK, we probably don’t need to extoll its virtues to you.

Now one high street shop has decided to create the LBD to end all LBDs.

Wallis quizzed 1,000 women on Christmas party dressing to discover the exact specifications women look for in their perfect hero dress – in terms of style, fit, length, fabric and price.

And, unsurprisingly, an LBD it was:

The resulting dress features a sheer top with long sleeves and a rounded neck, and a black lace overlay. It’s described as a shift style and is knee-length (on the 5ft 9 model, anyway. On us, probably not so much).

The research specifically pointed to lace, long sleeves and knee-length as the preferred design, with over a third of those surveyed preferring an LBD for party season. In terms of style, 41% of women said they preferred a fitted dress.

Women were found to spend £70 on average and thus, Wallis’ dress has a price tag of £70 and is available at wallis.co.uk.

Given the lace, pale underlay and relatively high neck, it’s perhaps not quite as versatile as the average LBD in terms of styling it with statement necklaces and the like, but it could certainly hold its own with ankle boots, sandals or heels and would work with and without tights.

So what’s the verdict?
