Neutral colours rule at New York Fashion Week – four ways to wear cream this autumn
6 years ago
The streets of New York Fashion Week were awash with head-to-toe tonal looks. This season’s colour of choice: cream. Here’s how to get on board.
There once was a time when it was the boldest looks at fashion week that would garner the most attention. These looks didn’t even need to be stylish to grab attention, they just needed to be bright in colour and outrageous in design.
But this New York Fashion Week we have experienced the ultimate palate cleanser via tonal dressing. And the tone in question: cream.

This is no new concept; minimalists, Scandi devotees, normcores and Stylist’s resident Fashion Editor, Polly Knight, have been advocating a paired back look for a considerable time.
Last season we saw the biggest influx of beige into our wardrobe and now the style set are taking it one step further with the introduction of head to toe cream. A step up from summer white and more versatile to seasons

For obvious reasons it’s a tricky trend to tackle and, whilst we will desperately miss penne arrabiata, the results of full look tonal dressing are off the scale chic. Here’s the breakdown on how to make it work.
Heavier Accessories
For those who, when opting for head-to-toe colour, choose black, this is the one for you. Heavy set accessories – with added stomp and chunk – is the way to take cream into that comfortable ‘black’ realm.
It toughens the look without being aggressive and adds an easy street-esque take on the trend. Road test your look with a black biker boots and as you get more comfortable swap them out for a black patent cowboy boot.

Take It To Work
Workwear doesn’t have to be black, grey or navy. Cream can easily transition into your work wardrobe regardless of season. Take this show-goer who has effortlessly paired a pleated midi skirt with a semi-sheer blouse.
They key to this look is in its relaxed look, keep the shirt tucked out and make sure it’s in an opposing fabrication to the shirt. Cream sunglasses not necessary but actively encourages.

Off White
Cream, but make it off duty. Invest in a loose fitting pair of cream trousers and it will be the wardrobe staple you never knew you needed. Style it as seen on Sarah Harris with a crisp white t-shirt and slides (weather permitting) and add on a chunky knit come October.
Trench coat
Trench coat lovers rejoice, update your trusty beige or dark brown to a lighter cream and you’re set for the rest of 2019 and beyond.
For a full tonal look, take on cream denim as seen in this look and offset with dark accessories. For an easier way to wear, pair the trench with dark denim and a cream roll neck.
