Thought we’d reached peak Disney? Guess again. Wedding dress designer Alfred Angelo has debuted new additions to his Disney Fairy Tale Weddings dress collection, with rapturous applause at New York Bridal Fashion Week.
Already featuring an ice blue Elsa dress inspired by Frozen, a white and pale pink Sleeping Beauty gown, plus a mint green Tiana dress paying homage to Princess and the Frog, the range has now expanded to include frocks taking their cue from two new Disney muses.
Mulan, who aptly will also now be getting her own live-action Disney remake, has inspired a key look for the coming bridal season, while Pocahontas has lent her signature style to an embroidered gown too.
Taking to the runway alongside the Ariel, Elsa and Cinderella gowns, all now updated in traditional white, the Mulan dress combines a high lace neckline in the style of a Mandarin collar, with a fit and flare shape. There’s plenty of crystal beading too, of course.
With its semi-cathedral-length train, the frock falls on the more restrained end of the Disney weddings range, for the bride who only wants to nod to her fairy tail obsession, perhaps.
Angelo’s Pocahontas dress takes a similar line with its fitted body flowing into a gentle kick-flare. The Native American princess’ iconic tunic gets a special reference however, thanks the sweeping one-shouldered detail, cut from delicate tulle.
Describing the frock in his own words, Angelo writes of the dress: “Traditional lace, a sophisticated fit and flare silhouette and Pocahontas' signature one-shoulder neckline come together to create a wedding dress that is as strong as the heroine herself.
“Combining tradition and modernity, the entire gown has been decorated with corded embroidered lace and accented with a single draped tulle shoulder strap. The empire waist features a shirred waistband and a rhinestone and crystal beaded medallion. The gown is finished with self-covered buttons and a chapel length train.”
Though seemingly harking back to big, frothy frock tradition, the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings collection arguably follows the current trend for mixing things up on the big day.
From the brightly coloured dresses worn by the likes of Gwen Stefani and Kaley Cuoco, to taking your favourite childhood Disney character as inspiration, today’s bridal trends are all about embracing your personality and individual style.
Hence the stripped back wedding plans of brides who’d prefer less fuss, and the incredibly colourful arrangements of Instagram’s most popular alternative brides.
Whether you’re a tradition-loving Cinderella or more of a Mulan, anything goes.
