Naked waists are registering on every scale of the celebrity style barometer.

The '90s revival trend that's been seeping from the catwalks since 2011 has been embraced like no other this past month...

Day-glo, jumpsuits, wedges, bleached denim, we can handle - or ignore - but the Clueless era renaissance is making abdomens the focal point of an outfit and we're a tad unnerved.

We're comfortable with midriff-baring outfits being the domain of Rihanna or Nicole Scherzinger. Not with them becoming a viable wardrobe option for us non-celebrities, who don't have a stage routine.

Thankfully, the new midriff isn't sandwiched between a cut-off t-shirt and Daisy Dukes, a la the MTV generation...

But even paired with over-the-knee skirts, smart trousers or long sleeves, we're not convinced a navel-highlighting outfit will cut it during office hours.

Designer Madeleine Vionnet is the woman to credit for first bringing the bare stomach into fashion in 1932, with an evening gown featuring strategically cut waist openings.

And then in the early '90s, thanks to the likes of Calvin Klein and Kate Moss, crop tops and the naked waist became commonplace.
