Floor-sweeping maxi coats are the style to know for autumn/winter 2023. Stylist’s acting fashion director Harriet Davey picks three to add to basket.

While I’m a summer girl at heart, autumn/winter will always have me in a chokehold due to its array of fresh outerwear. I tend to buy a new coat every year, but this doesn’t mean I forget about all the other styles already in my wardrobe. And usually, I don’t buy into trends – especially when it comes to coats (we all remember when everyone ended up wearing the same Zara printed coat that gained its own Instagram account to document its many sightings, don’t we?). Rather than the cult coat of the moment, I invest in timeless styles that I know will serve me well for years to come.

For autumn/winter 2023, though, I can tick off one of this season’s key coat trends while also sticking to my only-buy-classics rule. And it’s all thanks to one style: the maxi coat.

The one thing my winter coats always have in common is the length. I like them to hang around my calves, if not nearly to the floor. So this is a silhouette I’m already familiar with, and I’m so happy it’s everywhere right now. All of my favourite designers – including Max Mara, The Row, Loewe and Tove – put maxi coats on the runway for autumn/winter 2023.

Hailey Bieber also loves a maxi coat (she’s been spotted wearing different styles throughout this year), while fellow cool girls Zoë Kravitz, Kendall Jenner and Rihanna have been seen in longline styles, too.

Want to get in on the action? This trend is all about oversized tailoring, so look for chic, fuss-free styles that will let the length do all the talking.

Below, I’ve rounded up the maxi coats that are firmly on my wish list. Now, which one to choose? I’ll let you be the judge…

h&m maxi coat

H&M Wool Blend Coat

I have to say, H&M has some of the very best coats on the high street this season. There are so many in the ‘saved’ folder on my account, but this slouchy oversized style is the one I’m going to have to add to my coat collection.

Aligne coat

Aligne George Slouch Oversize Wool Coat

If you want a maxi length without an oversized silhouette, this grey style from Aligne is a winner. In one of the key colours for autumn/winter 2023, it’s ticking all the sartorial boxes. The belted waist also balances out the length, so it doesn’t feel like too much fabric.

Karen Millen coat

Karen Millen Italian Wool Maxi Double Breasted Tailored Coat

Red is having quite the moment this season. Although it’s a trend, it’s a colour that always sticks around – and so one worth investing in. This gorgeous longline coat also comes in classic grey and camel, so there are options for the minimalists, too.
