If you’re lucky enough to own any of these, you could make a LOT of money…
Ah, trainers. The humble sneaker began its life as strictly functional activewear, before evolving into a streetwear staple. Thanks to the ongoing athleisure fashion trend (and Meghan Markle’s fondness for a £115 white sneaker), though, trainers are now so much more than off-duty shoes: they’re sartorial saviours.
And, as such, retro trainers have become a Very Big Deal on fashion resale sites, too.
StockX, the world’s first ‘stock market of things’ and leading luxury resale marketplace, has unveiled its ranking of the 10 most expensive sneakers in the world. And it certainly makes for compelling reading – particularly as the top spot has been claimed by a pair of shoes worth an eye-watering £19,715.
We are, of course, talking about the futuristic Nike Air MAG, famously immortalised by Marty McFly in 1989’s Back to the Future II. We saw them in the movie, we wanted them in real life, and Nike certainly delivered in 2016… albeit with an extremely limited run. In fact, just 89 pairs of these light up high-tops were released, which may go some way towards explaining why resale sites have priced them at just under £20,000.

Next on the list is the Air Jordan Kobe pack, which famously included the two pairs of Air Jordan PE Lakers that Kobe Bryant wore during the 2002/2003 NBA season, when the then-number 8 player of the Lakers lost his lucrative contract with Adidas due to the well-known judicial problems (he went on to sign an exclusive contract with Nike the following summer).
Both models are characterised by white uppers and colourful details inspired by the official colours of the Los Angeles team… and both are worth a cool £10,330, according to StockX.
Proving Nike will always be popular, the Nike Dunk’s basketball shoe sprints into third place at £8,590. And there are plenty more retro throwbacks on the list, too: think the Air Jordan 4 Retro Eminem Carhartt (£7,534), the Adidas Human Race NMD Pharrell x Chanel (£6,418) and the Nike Dunk Low Staple SB NYC Pigeon (£6,166), too.
