Lace skirts are everywhere at New York Fashion Week – this is how to recreate the style

Whether styled with a loose-fitting T-shirt or a cosy cardigan, these skirts will make you want to pack away your jeans for good.

New York Fashion Week is currently in full swing, with Khaite, Ralph Lauren and Off-White, to name but a few, providing highlights that will linger on many a fashion fan’s radar. Yet, runway shows aside, it’s the guests in attendance who provide plenty of styling inspiration, and this season, one item has stuck out: lace skirts.

While it’s not necessarily a new trend – they feature on many a Tumblr feed with Dr Martens and a faded band T-shirt in tow – the lace skirt has certainly had a resurgence. Although perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s had a stylistic upgrade since the days of the original flip phones.

This week in New York, we’ve seen them styled with tailored waistcoats, colour-coordinating straight-cut tunics and cosy cardigans, proving there are plenty of ways to wear the lace look. You may also be surprised to learn that the graphic T-shirt has not been completely forgotten: plenty of chic women on Pinterest are reviving the original ‘lace skirt plus band shirt’ look for more casual occasions. This time around, we’re turning to bright and bold trainers rather than a chunky boot.

What pulls us towards the retro style is how easy they are to wear through all seasons, particularly the tricky transitional time between summer and autumn. They offer sweet respite from wearing jeans over and over when we’re having a weather-led dressing dilemma.

For warmer days, trainers, pumps or kitten heels look chic, while colder weather calls for knee-high boots and a chunky knit. So you can swap the skirt in place of your go-to trusty trousers for an effortlessly elevated look within seconds. Easy.
