Katie Holmes stepped out in New York wearing a cashmere cardigan and a matching cashmere bra, and the fashion world has gone wild.
This week actress Katie Holmes was spotted flagging a yellow cab in New York. Now there is nothing out of the ordinary in this scene: a woman in a city trying to get taxi somewhere. In fact we have all lived a version of this scene. So, why has it so viral I have scrolled past at least 10 reposts of this exact picture on my Instagram feed?
I’ll tell you why. Because for the past three months (if not longer) we have been subjected to images of celebrities swanning around picturesque white beaches in pristine sundresses, bathing in bikinis so chic we are convinced they have never seen water and carrying a bucket tonne of basket bags. This is the first time we have really seen anything that resembles an outfit that isn’t all about summer.
Sporting a matching cashmere cardigan and bra set, Katie Holmes just turned the entire fashion industry’s attention to autumn. Although we have been waxing lyrical about the return of the cardigan since we spotted its comeback on the Prada, Christopher Kane and Miu Miu catwalks, we had been skeptical as to how we were going to make this work IRL come September.

It’s the simplicity of the cardigan bra combination that has really captured out sartorial hearts. The cardigan is chunky but not-too-chunky, meaning it grants the wearer an easy cosiness. In addition to this it the perfect shade of taupe – mixing the two colours of the season beige and grey better than Farrow and Ball could.
And then there’s the bra. Who even knew we needed a cashmere bra? Soft, supple and sexy, the bra is all kinds of underwear as outerwear goals.

But let’s get down to the crunch of the matter: where can I get this look? And how much will it cost me? Like all the best things in life, this look doesn’t come cheap. The bradigan combo comes courtesy of cult New York brand Khaite (they do a puff-sleeve like no other) and paired together will set you back £1,692. That’s a £427 bra and a £1,265 cardigan if you want to mull over the details. In fact, you can’t actually get this bra now because it sold out in an hour. (I’ll let that sink in). But if you are willing to sub your rent, that butter-soft cashmere cardigan is still available for purchase.
It’s the laissez-fair attitude from Holmes that really sold it to us. The cardigan sloped effortless off one shoulder and buttoned only in the middle, exposing the cusp of the cashmere bra is officially the only way to wear a cardigan this season.
Thank you Katie, suddenly we can’t wait for autumn to come.
