Kate Moss' style secrets

By Stylist Team

Kate Moss is renowned for her feminine, edgy and effortless style but it's not just a supermodel figure and access to designer clothes that makes her one of the world's most enduring fashion icons - she's got a method. The Moss method (if you will).

A relentless trend-setter, she has been heralded as the face of British fashion since she first hit the scene as a waifish 14-year-old. Her most recent collection for Topshop - her third in five years of collaborating with the brand - was an instant sell-out.

Aside from a short blip in the early '90s when she was an experimental teenager exploring her own personal style, the 41-year-old has always presented an aspirational and authoritative spin on fashion. She's honed this iconic style status with the help of seven key wardrobe staples. Take a look...

The early years

First some background. Behind every great style icon are some not so polished teenage outfit choices.

We don't love the fit of this shiny suit and trainers on a 19-year-old Kate in in 1993, but the model would later nail masculine tailoring and make it her own.

The early years

Before she discovered her trademark off-duty style, the teenage model's 1993 denim jacket and pumps combo blended into the crowd.

The early years

This white floor-length dress is very '90s but the model hasn't quite put the Kate stamp on the look.

The early years

The Croydon native's early-years airport style wasn't quite the slick affair it is today.

The early years

A memorable choice for an elite model party with fellow super Naomi Campbell in 1993 - and a glimpse of the daring fashionista she would become...

THE LBD

Moss discovered the power of a good LBD early on.

This cutaway Balenciaga dress was a distinctive hit in 2003.

THE LBD

She's just as comfortable in a more classic, glamorous style.

This Stella McCartney black and nude illusion dress turned heads in 2013.

THE LBD

She's not afraid to bring out the hips.

Floaty frocks

As well as leggy LBDS, the model has long relied on having floaty, floor-length numbers in her style arsenal.

She curled her hair and piled on the dark shadow for this ethereal Alexander McQueen gown in 2004.

Floaty frocks

She's angelic in Stella McCartney at the the 2008 Met Gala.

Floaty frocks

There's a Spanish vibe to her own Topshop design in 2007.

Floaty frocks

One of her most famous floaty dress moments came in 2007, when she launched her first Topshop range with a mannequin-like pose in the window of the retailer's flagship Oxford Street store.

Floaty frocks

She chose long and flowy for her 2011 wedding to Jamie Hince with a classic John Galliano bias-cut oyster silk chiffon dress.

Masculine tailoring

Never sticking to one particular style is key to her style success.

No one quite does a sharp jacket and skinny jeans quite like Ms Moss.

Masculine tailoring

She teams her slouchy jacket with pointy shoes and a '60s-inspired bouffant at a 2010 Topshop event.

Masculine tailoring

Jacket, skinnies, heels and shades are quintessential Kate.

Masculine tailoring

Pointy-toed slip-ons are a favourite choice with a sharp-shouldered blazer.

Masculine tailoring

She often experiments with metallics, such as this effortlessly cool two-piece suit last year.

Fake fur

Way back in the day, while Naomi was rocking colourful tartan, Kate showed a leaning towards statement fake fur...

It was to become an enduring love affair.

She's quite '50s Hollywood starlet in a cropped fur jacket for an event at Buckingham Palace in 2004.

The coat-skirt-shades combo is pure glamour.

Bare leg boho

This grunge-edged outfit launched a spate of copycat disc belts.

Bold prints

We just love this picture.

Bold, statement prints have featured prominently over the years and the supermodel looks in her element in this vintage green tunic dress at a V&A exhibition in 2004.

It's another high-impact Alexander McQueen print dress that's catching our eye in 2010.

Animal print is one of the model's signature looks.

This train dress even got matching shoes at a 2006 event at the Dorchester hotel.

She's the proud owner of a range of animal print coats...

Leopard print is a favourite.

She's keeps hair and make-up natural with a Marc Jacobs animal print maxi in 2012.
